Im leaning more towards male because there are more male characteristics than female, but this is just another good example of how hard they are to tell apart. The biggest female trait is the black in the dorsal seems to be filled in rather than just the bars trailing into the dorsal like on most males eventually.

Heres pics of my male exhibiting all the same features I see so strongly in yours.

I say male, because of the spangles on the scales and back of dorsal.
I cant rule out hybrid, but I dont know what with.

I WOULD JUMP ALL OVER THAT FISH! That is one terrific looking festae!

Regarding your questions about the tail looking like that of a Midas or Red Devil, I wouldn't worry about it. That is to be expected from closely related species (they're all Amphilophus). As far as the dorsal, etc. it just looks like a very healthy fish to me.

There is a very blue type of festae that some people keep also. I think Reagan may have some pics. Nothing says hybrid to me.

GET IT!

yeah def looks like a pure MALE 100% FESTAE to me, has black dorsal but that body spangling and greenish blue on the face are totally male characteristics, and both males and females will have the nice little trailers like that and like cchhcc said they are in the same family as midas, etc so will be bound to have somewhat similar body structure, its def a really nice festae!!

pure festae and i think its female. normally the males display the black dorsal when there black verticle lines are protruding up into ther dorsal fin but that fish is not displaying the black verticle lines and still has the black dorsal. thats the only reason i lean toward female either way buy it.

I would go grab this guy, but Im waiting to hear from you about your's... Your's is wild right?

if you guys think it's a male, then what's up with that big black on the dorsal?

So it's a 100% festae?

deff festae but it could be male or female. im leaning toward female as reason stated above. i wouldnt pass on it. once you get it home and it colors up more then you will deff know.
