It could be one of the Vieja type, but hard to tell at this point because at that size, all the "Vieja" species tend to look alike.
But beside not being African, it is also "not" S American, but it is Central American, none of the Vieja come from S America. They range from Panama in the south, to Mexico as the northern extent of their range. They prefer hard, alkaline water, and grow quite large under good conditions, some up to over 15" in length with girth and body mass to match.

I have midevil grow out tank and with vieja synspilums. I'm not going to lie i get confused a lot which ones are which but usually the Vieja will have those markings like the pictures I posted.

Here are some young cichlids to compare
First is a young synspillum/melanurus (synspillum(1935) may actually be invalid), because the name melanurus (1862) was given in the original description over 100 years before.

and a young breidhori

and a couple young Amphilophus to compare (both closely related to "midevils" and showing similar juvenile coloration.)

above "amarillo, below flaveolus

In future, you may wish to figure out compatibility before purchasing new fish.

The AMPH species or even Vieja will get to a foot long so just remember they get big fast and a lot are very territorial and can wipe out a whole tank. I had a Midas who killed 8 of my large fish in one night. All dead murdered because he was breeding and I had no idea. 200 gallon tank as well.

This is very true. It's like a switch just turns on in their head one day... and then everything is dead.
