No joke anything that has AMPH blood has it in them. Vieja in my opinion have mild aggression I would put money on any amph species to win.
I had a bifasciata that as it was growing up just decimated my tank one day. I looked in and it had its mating colors on, and all the other fish were ripped apart or dead including a flowerhorn. He was never one to mess with.

Oh yeah they're on PCP when they start to breed. I got rid of my Midas I felt bad I had him for 6 years but literally he was a monster and would splash water and just bang the tank to scare us. 1.5 years of every month breeding and then he killed his wife. Every batch had 1,000 at least fry and man got annoying quick lol

It could be one of the Vieja type, but hard to tell at this point because at that size, all the "Vieja" species tend to look alike.
But beside not being African, it is also "not" S American, but it is Central American, none of the Vieja come from S America. They range from Panama in the south, to Mexico as the northern extent of their range. They prefer hard, alkaline water, and grow quite large under good conditions, some up to over 15" in length with girth and body mass to match.
Here are some young cichlids to compare
First is a young synspillum/melanurus (synspillum(1935) may actually be invalid), because the name melanurus (1862) was given in the original description over 100 years before.

and a young breidhori

and a couple young Amphilophus to compare (both closely related to "midevils" and showing similar juvenile coloration.)

above "amarillo, below flaveolus
Do you know what other species of fish are compatible with the Amarillo fish? We're trying to find a tank mate for it because it is so shy and thanks for the reply!
