Bolton is right. It is a Synspilum. As for it not having the reddest of heads, not all will do so. It is also common to see them with a lot of black down their sides especially with age. Here is 2 Syns I used to have. Both around 13" and fed the same diet.Look at how different they are in colour. They are also from the same spawn.Old pics from a poor quality cam so please excuse the pic quality.

Are they both from the same line? I always thought they get more colors and get not more black as they get older, I mean thought their black colorings were supposed to gradually break up as they age.

Now your second fish looks like a Synspilum.

Yes.Same spawn. The top guy who was the last one to leave me actually got darker as he got older. The other one got more colourful as you described so I guess it goes both ways.

Interesting, second fish has the classic Synspilum look, while first doesn't look like how the specie is described at all. Is that the first fish's constant colors?

It would change a little depending on his mood. That one was a dominant s@#$.That was pretty much his usual colour in his older yrs.He was more colourful when he was younger but never anything like his sibling.

Thought Synspilum supposed to have red face/head? And besides the fish in question has too much black and no red head(maybe stressed), Synspilums are not called Redhead cichlids for no reasons.

Does every Jag have the same spot pattern? Does every Midas have the same coloration? Does every Firemouth have the same intensity of red coloration on their throat? There's a lot of variation in coloration between cichlids of the same species.

Follow this Synspillum link to see for yourself.

We all know no two Jags will ever have the same patterns, it's just like no two humans will have the same finger print, right?

As for the Midas and RD, anyone that has ever kept any will already know that they are some of the most variable fishes out there so not point in already pointing.

Now for the as for the Firemouth, the red intensity may not be the same but the same basic colorations will be.

Different locations will produce different morphs.

Did you look at the link yourself? Some of those fishes are not even Synspilum.

And who's to say that most of the Synspilums in the hobby are not hybrids SynXBif. It's just like the MidasXRD deal IMO, if you want a pure fish, you'll have to get it from a reliable source.

Well you probably have a valid point there.....didn't think about that angle. I was just saying there's a lot of color variation with different Synspillum.
