I have sliders now for almost 3 years from a large tank to a pond. they are 10-11"! They grow big and need more room than most people have.

It's sad but true JR. Many cheap turtles sold in pet stores are the ones that need a lot of space.

Yeah u can't sell them to the pet shop or at least the lfs are not supposed to sell them i tried the same thing when i was a teen went to the lfs with a bucket full thinking i was going to cash out but no such luck.OH and they do get big i have seen them in the wild like 18" long but i am sure that is with 25 years of growth.

How hard are they to come by at the store or to catch?

There aren't any yellow bellied sliders in your range, they're warmwater turtles. They're extremely easy to find for sale though, I have two.
They're one of the most common species sold.

A 45g isn't big enough for 3 turtles of those species, much less several of each.

well i released the turtle back to where i found it. since it has the potential to get really big and i am not 100% sure i can keep one that large i just took it back.

the tire i found them in also had some that looked like them but with red on their faces instead of yellow. they are really pretty but i would just feel better keeping a smaller turtle if i am going to keep one. right now i got my hands full as it is with a breeding pair of dovii!!

Hey I'm glad you released it where you found it. No point taking on an animal that you don't really plan on keeping for it's entire life. I'm sure the turtle thanks you. Besides you have a breeding pair of Dovii's! You lucky guy, good luck with those brutes!
