After doing abit more research and reading def looks like hes not a carpo or a tigre... he has no noticeable pattern on his head. Hes settled in well and his color is nice and crisp ect so hes def not faed/washed out ect. You can see in the pics hes got almost a golden hue to his head and the mouth is def uptilted ect.. he does have the body type of a Tigre though. very snake-like.

G. Coatesi, G. Pedanopterus, G. Curupira all look very similar. There are more that look similar (probably a dozen), but these three are most common in the hobby. I'm not an expert though, so it's very hard to tell which one.

tbh he looks most like G. Coatesi, but still different. But is it often adults are imported? or I guess are they usually imported as adults/subadults? since he's already 8-10"?
My G. Coatesi came in at 3". Importers prefer to bring in smaller fish to save on their own shipping costs, but that doesn't mean that larger fish won't be imported.
It certainly could be G. Coatesi, but I don't know enough to give a 100% ID.

Here's an updated photo of my G. Coatesi at about 6" now. As you can see, it need a bit more size to see how the barring turns out.
Even most of the websites I go to have photos under incorrect scientific names, which causes more confusion. I'm not exaggerating when I say there are a dozen different species that all look almost identical. The golden shine on the head is an interesting trait that I haven't seen in my G. Coatesi.
Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will chime in.

This is exactly the issue I ran into w/ my TSN as well.. But I am asking questions for learning and wanting to educate myself, not trying to come off as an ass. words in a forum are hard to add emotion/ect too =) Seems all the pictures I'm running into are cross referencing w/ other ID's ect and until Like you I get a grasp/feel for what species look like Its extreamely frustrating. But reguardless hes a cool fish and I will def be updateing ect. Your Coatesi's body looks different then my guys, and the barring looks very different as well ( but for all I know it could be the photo and individuals pattern >.< ) . But like you said w/ growth/age ect a lot of species ime oddball ones in particular can change durastically.
Haha you're not coming off as an ass at all. I understand that it is very frustrating, especially when your trying to reference your own photos with other fish incorrectly ID'd on the net.
My G. Coatesis' bars will become complete as it grows I'd imagine, then it will be a little bit easier to see the differences with an adult specimen. The genus needs to be updated badly. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are the same species, just different locations and minor pattern differences.

You would see yellow spotting on the face if it was a true Tiger.
I don't see it being Gymnotus tigre for that reason - I am having a hard time with a 100% ID though. While it does look similar to a Carapo, you can see very clear differences between your's and mine. (Shorter body with my jagged stripes) However Carapo Knives vary depending on the collection location, which I'll have to look back into as I don't remember the two locations or the differences. It is not G. Coatesi, so we'll scratch those two for sure - I'll see what I can find, been awhile since I've looked into Knives.
EDIT: The Gymnotus curupira shown in the video is very close to the fish you have - that is the best bet. Longer body, darker stripe directly by the head, cleaner stripes, lighter shades between the bars of those stripes. I think that might be it, I'll keep looking though.
