ID?

The fish is not G. Tigre as it does not have patterns on the face as well it lacks the oranges shade of a G. Tigre. It's also not a G. Pedanopterus as, G. Pedanopteris is actually the miniature version of G. Tigre. It also have patterns on the face but does not have the orange shade that G. Tigre have. It's not G. Coatesis or G. Curupira either. As both G. Coatesis and G. Curupira have wider bars and they also split at the dorsal and ventral halfway of the body. Also not a G. Carapo for sure as it lacks the spots and some zigzag patterns.

The fish in the pics is actually G. Chaviro. At 8-10" is already an adult and won't expect to grow any bigger than that.

I think we have an ID! tyvm! I googled the pic and looked as some scientific research pics describeing the species and feel pretty confident in your ID. Have you kept this species before?

You would see yellow spotting on the face if it was a true Tiger.
I don't see it being Gymnotus tigre for that reason - I am having a hard time with a 100% ID though. While it does look similar to a Carapo, you can see very clear differences between your's and mine. (Shorter body with my jagged stripes) However Carapo Knives vary depending on the collection location, which I'll have to look back into as I don't remember the two locations or the differences. It is not G. Coatesi, so we'll scratch those two for sure - I'll see what I can find, been awhile since I've looked into Knives.

EDIT: The Gymnotus curupira shown in the video is very close to the fish you have - that is the best bet. Longer body, darker stripe directly by the head, cleaner stripes, lighter shades between the bars of those stripes. I think that might be it, I'll keep looking though.

I can see a HUGE difference in the over-all head shape just from this pic. Yours was a much long/narrower head compared to my fish he has more a "bulldog" type head.

I've kept many species of naked back knifefish in the past but all my collections are in being use as test subjects in University here in BC.

Well he's doing great, eating live blackworms like crazy and picking off the occasional minnow it seems.. I did add some larger teteras 3 Columbians, a pair if celebese rainbows and a yo-yo loach... which is the interesting one... I was abit concerned w/ the loaches pattern/color being similar I might see some aggression! But they are actually best buddies! So if my LFS gets anymore in I am thinking about trying to add another 1-2 to the tank and upgrading them to the 75 for space if needed.

This lil' bugger is even more reclusive then our aba.. plan on redecorating in the next few weeks so hopefully get some nice pics of him then. I was wrong about the minnows... he hasn't even touched some endler hybrid males I'm currently keeping in the tank. so far only eats blackworms but hoping he starts taking NLS thera A or prime reef flakes I feed the tank.

Picked up another one today! about the same size from the same distributor via our lfs.. >.< does look very similar but looks like it may have patterning on its face and heads abit longer looking not so bulldoggish... atm they are playing nice and he may just be stressed ect. So will see if they get along or else will separate them. what a fun lil' knife.
