Ideal tank dimensions for a Mbu?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have tried to keep gsps a few times and was only able to keep them for about a year or so before they died and the biggest was just over 2" I have very hard water "well water" I wonder if that was the problem.

A local pet store has a mbu that is around 10" maybe 12" and they tell me it is 7 years old.

Well, unless it is being kept in say an 800G+ tank, its most likely very badly stunted otherwise it should be well over 12" by now...

I'm presuming you kept them in fully fresh water??? if that is the case then thats why they didn't make it past a year, since they need very high end brackish, almost marine water parameters...

I find it hard to belive that a tank will stunt the growth of any fish unless the fish is touching the sides and is packed in with no room to move.

I really do not know I will ever be able to own a MBU although it is one of the fish i most desire to keep. They require such huge footprints to thrive, you would have to commit an entire basement of your house to a tank for these guys.

Since my fahaka (at 10 years old) is only very close to 12", it is my opinion that he is stunted in the 125g he lives in.

Well also his genetics might just have his max size at about the 12" mark. I am sure just as with any other animal there are genetically larger and smaller specimens.

That may ber very true. I notice the fahakas with the gorgeous maroon stripes (which Filbert doesn't have), seem to grow much larger in the same size tanks.

Regardless, you have the right mindset regarding the situation. It is never a bad thing to think your fish would be better in a larger tank. It will ALWAYS be happier in a larger environment. You Fahaka looks very health and happy to me, I would not worry too much about him.

I'm actually seriously considering giving up my garage (or at least part of it)
