Ideas for 125 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That should be good for cleanings. As for the cichlids. You are right that fire mouths do better in groups, but they may gang up on the solo rainbow. The rainbow being much more peaceful may need the security.

So I didn’t realize how small rainbows were- looks like 3-4”. That’s probably too small. Let’s open this thing up - who’s got an idea?

Think a group of red hooks or FM could definitely work. Maybe FM and some tetras? Suggestions on tetras?

I guess I’m just looking to try a new species... I’ve done dempseys, GT, severums, carpintis, etc. All the basics.

If you are up for something a little crazy, what about exodons. The only issue is that they may beat up on the Oscar. I’ve seen pics/videos of them together though and it is beautiful.

First off, once that oscar reaches full size, and along with the plecos, then you will have a fair bio load going on in that 125. So, if you want to add more fish (and I agree, that tank is crying out for more fish/decor) then i think you need to stay away from fish that are going to get large, your bio load will eventually be crazy. So, smallish fish it is, but, will they end up as dinner for your oscar? Depends on the choice of fish.

I'm a great fan of filament barbs. Check out pictures of them on line, they are stunning, especially when they develop their "filaments" on their dorsel fin and the males start showing off. They will certainly give you more movement in that tank, they are constantly on the go. As a result of their movement and speed i'd be surprised if your oscar could catch them! They grow to about 6-7" and you would need to get six minimum, they look far better in multiples. They are plant destroyers though being barbs, but you don't have any!

Admittedly i'm a little biased because I have them, but at least give them a thought, look them up, I think they'd give you the movement, a bit of colour, and a bit of a wow factor too in that currently very drab looking tank.

As they grow though you are going to have to be on your game regarding water changes due to total bio load.

These had not crossed my mind! Excellent suggestion

not by design - ive got a rando koi angel, flag tail, and few CL’s

GL!

If your oscar truly is mellow (lack of aggression to plecos is not a good indicator of that- they are not similar enough to warrant much territoriality) I would recommend your choice of south american cichlid 5" max or so, in a small group. Acaras (just about any type) would be a good fit. Though, I agree that once fully grown, your Oscar and plecos should max the tank out bioload-wise.

Any fish going in with that oscar needs to be close to full grown already (or minimum 5" total length or tall bodied like 3" high). If you want FM, change out the substrate to no larger than #20 mesh size silica sand (or pool filter sand).
