Ideas for a DIY Glass tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The base isn't the problem - it's the top. The bottom pane of glass stops the sides from flexing at the bottom, but without the red brace the sides can flex and possibly fail.

The Lulu fish shop is the one nearest to my house. They are crooks if you're not careful.
Best place to get a tank made would be Satwa. There's a place down there called world of birds, run by an older guy and he quoted me Dhs 1400 for a 2mx70cmx70cm tank not that long ago. Seemed cheap

yes the one in lulu they just want to sell sell sell... wat ever you say.. he says buy this!!.
anyway i ll check out the one in satwa... after iftar ;)
but btw i could tell you i have been checking out the prices for glass + silicon, 2mx70cmx70cm... would cost me around 400 dhs material. ofcourse with no cabinet/stand .. did u get ask for one with the cabinet/stand?

Hey Ramzi whats up? Ramadan Karim.

I happen to be in the same situation as yourself, I'm currently working on a 210 gallon tank; 200 length x 50 width and 80 height. I've been doing some research for the past few weeks and as far as tanks and metal stands go I've pretty much gathered enough information to get started. My suggestions are to come up with a plan and a design for them if you have the time then go about asking for prices and material sources. A DIY will save you loads of dirhams around every corner. The bracing in your diagram is not enough and if Dubai is anything like Cairo then you'd be better off going with a metal stand because steel is cheaper than wood and from my humble point of view much sturdier.

Have you thought about an acrylic tank? It's lighter, clearer and doesn't break like glass but then again its more expensive. It would cost me 5x as much as a glass tank.

This link is all you need as far as glass goes:

Take a good read and you'll get an idea about building glass aquariums and how to design your own. I actually emailed the author, he's very friendly and replied to my inquiry promptly.

Do you have an idea about the rest of your setup?

No, just a tank. I get the stands built from steel box section at work. Dhs 400 for all the glass you'd need seems far too cheap but I've never priced up glass other than to have tank tops made up. Like I said I've considered making me own ank but I'd rather pay someone a few hundred to do it for me then have a go at it myself. That tank sealant is some potent poison if you get a lung full of it.

If you do decide to go ahead and make your own tank, DO NOT use the regular silicon that you buy in most hard wear shops here. It's not designed for gluing glass together. I used it once to repair a brace in one of my tanks. It worked for a while and then one day just let go. It was too soft and stretchy when put under pressure and after a few weeks it failed totally. The only thing I would trust is the aquarium sealant and glass adhesive they sell in Ace Hardwear, it's not cheap but all the repairs i've made with it are permanent.

Hey ramzi
I have recently finished building my tank 2.5 m long 70 cm high and 1 m wide. I used dow corning 895structural sealant silicon, it was recommended by a pet shop here it works good, Had no problem with it. They used it in all their tanks.
I encourage you to build it yourself. You will enjoy it and it is not that hard. I recommend adding aluminum corners fram to the outside of the tank, will strengthen the sides.
By the way if u need any help pm me

Hi guys, i m relativly new to this forum, i am planning to build my first SW fish tank and i had a few questions hope you can help me.

I asked my local glass store if they can build me a tank thats

5 foot long x 1.8 foot wide x 1.5 foot deep

Are you building this or is the glass shop? if you are building it, use the 'glue' you feel is correct.. if they are building it, they they should know what is safe & proper, if not, they are not the place to use.. IMHO
