Ideas on stocking a 125 with my first Bichir

Happy to finally get you over on the Darkside take a look at wet spots stock list they have a decent assortment of polys the canopy is fine it's the lids you have to be concerned with duct tape the front lids and duct tape some plexiglass over any openings in the back and you'll be good to go as for the cichlids I think you've done a ton of homework on them and that's stocks looks great but it's always a guessing game with these guys you never know who's going to be a troublemaker there's always one in the bunch that doesn't want to follow our plans like we discussed earlier the main concern for me is feedings it's always been a nightmare LOL

Thanks! Yeah i saw wetspot had the senegals. They are always an option. But the delhezi and polli seems to be more ellusive.

So are you saying a canopy would be better than the lids? I guess I could have a canopy that was completely enclosed though and just user a router or something to carve out the holes for the intake tubes. Maybe that would be the most secure? That way there really is no opening except when I purposefully open it? That would keep me from having to duct tape things? Or maybe i'm misreading this.

Edit: also I'm seeing a lot of albinos. Are these guys blind?

You'll be fine with the bichirs - cichlid combo. Any aggression issue experienced will be the cichlid cohabbing.

As for feeding the group. I'd bypass masivore due to pellet size and it's expensive. Suggest going with hikari sinking gold medium (2.2lb bag $20 on amazon). I'd also consider hikari sinking or floating excel w/veggie matter for your suggested cichlids. Good luck!

Thank you for the food tips! So you'd go cichlid gold over sinking carnivore pellets for the bichirs as well?

Am I correct in thinking if I had a fully enclosed canopy, that would be a better option for keeping the bichirs safe than glass lids? Or should i do the lids as well as the canopy?

Are albinos blind?

I feel the carnivore is intended more for the larger bottom feeders. If you're only going with small upperjaw polys. There are many other great choices as well. Cichlids tend to eat a bunch. To ensure everyone has their share. Floaters for them and sinkers for the polys.

As for the tank top. Seal all the openings. Duct tape, books, rock slate, whatever... Polys tend to jump out if a small opening is present. Even when u think that there is no way he/she can fit that hole. It's happened. There are many posts with a dried poly as a result.

The canopy is really for aesthetics to make the tank look like furniture. The lids are absolutely needed to help keep them from jumping aswell as lessen evaporation.

Dont stress the foods just give them a varied diet and they will be fine.make sure to include some chopped tilapia found in the frozen section of your grocery store.

Nls is another good brand mine love the thera A formula. Im a fan of their ingredients

I feed my cichlids the thera a pellets as well from NLS. The sajicas don't seem to like them but the sevs gobble them up.

If I were to build a canopy though that was fully enclosed except little holes for the intakes and outflows to go through from the canisters (perhaps with some duct tape around the holes just to be extra safe) wouldn't that be better than the lids? If the canopy is fully enclosed and they jumped out of the water there is no where for them to go? Or maybe I'm missing something.

I just know myself with the glass lids on the 75, I have a hard time remembering to close them. If i had to also duct tape them shut each day I know I would forget that.

I guess you could try it but the evaporation would eventually get annoying also getting into and out of the tank could be a headach with feedings and wc's

That is true. And if I could figure out the lid situation, lids would be much cheaper...and my wife wouldn't get so mad that I was spending lots of time in the garage working on "fish stuff"

I've been following your stocking thread over in the cichlid section, nice to see you made your way over here. The water is much warmer :)

I don't see any issues with your stock, granted I've never kept Bichirs but I know a thing or two about cichlids. Simply watch for aggression and react accordingly, unconventional stockings can work.

As a matter of fact your stocklist isn't all that different from my future stock list for my big boy tank..... I've said too much.
