Ideas on stocking a 125 with my first Bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha...oh she'd know. She knows more about fish tanks then she likes to know. She doesn't want the 180 because it sticks out farther than the 75. I can keep most of the fish I'm interested in in a 125 or 135. Though if a 180 pops it's head up on CL (my fish tank store of choice) and it's a good deal, I could probably talk her into it. But being safe and planning on a 125.

Splurge where you can. You may be limited on the tank at this moment but things can change. As an example get filters that would easily move toward a bigger tank in the future. Buy quality lighting, etc.

Yes I did notice no one commented on the BP...which is nice. It can be frustrating when you mention you want to keep one and all you get back is "Oh I wouldn't do them...they are ugly" ...Great...Thanks super helpful

Sorry I probably wasn't clear about the sev thing. Right now I've got two sevs in a 75 but they are giving me issues. One is being a total jerk so I have a feeling that both will not be able to stay in there. Once I get the 125, one of them will probably have to go in that tank. I wasn't originally planning on doing a sev in there but now it's looking like I probably will need to. I was originally planning on doing 1 chocolate, 1 BP, and 2 hets or 1 het and a nic (4 large cichlids total) but now it's looking like 1 severum will end up in here which means I will have to forego the second het/nic. I didn't feel like I had room for 5 large cichlids plus 4 rainbows, plus the polys (thinking starting with 3 and go from there). But you guys know more about big tanks than i do so I'll defer to you if you think it would be ok.

It's good to hear that your sev is babysitting your hets. I plan on getting a few young ones as soon as I can track them down or get a group order together for Cota and they'll go in the 75 with my pushover severum.

Well I did have two Severums in there, the one was being super aggressive to my baby hets so I put his fat ass in my 90 with my Polleni :)

Well I don't have 1K to drop on a tank so I'm limited to what is available on craigslist. So i've been keeping my eye out. I know I don't want a 150 because of the height. But honestly it will be whatever becomes available first at the right price. Though if a 180 comes open...then potentially a bocourti becomes an option :) We'll just have to see. Right now the market has been pretty dry for tanks

I believe (though correct me if i'm wrong) bocourti cichlids max out at about 15 inches. But agree with DMD123 DMD123 which is why if I got a 180 they may be an option.

As you can see, I'm going for the largest cichlids I can find that usually remain peaceful. Plus I want a BP. I've been told bocourti cichlids are quite peaceful for their size. Though I know each individual is different. That's the beauty of cichlids

My pearsei is a solid 14" and thick. To watch her maneuver in a 24" tank (with decor) at times is interesting to say the least. So a Bocourti with the same basic build in an 18" tank would even have more challenges. That was all I had meant. Not saying no to the idea, you just have to see a big bocourti or pearsei to see what I mean.

Ive owned both Bocourti and Pearsei and out of them I think the pearsei was more peaceful of the two and of course the females are calmer than the males.

A couple pics to show the pearsei from the side of the tank. Not the best of pics but with the decor in the tank she can have issues turning around because she is not very 'bendy'
