I know Paratheraps can be difficult to identify, especially when the pictures are crappy, but does anyone want to take a shot at this fish?

Yeah. He could be anything. I got him 12 hours ago, so the colours definitely aren't developed yet. But the blue on the cheeks narrows it down quite a lot.

EDIT: I just looked at the pictures in that link and yeah he does look very similar to the fish in those pics. Thanks!

Free is always great! How much do they usually go for in your neck of the woods?
All true Paratheraps fish aren't cheap here, because most, if not all, used to come from Jeff Rapps, until a cichlid specialist store closed down in the middle of this year (they used to import fish from Rapps, many wild-caught). Now we're getting nothing from Rapps, and so the prices of central americans are going up and up. A subadult pair of P. zonatus went for $100 a couple of months ago.

Anyway, back on topic: what's your opinion on the identity of this fish?

Oh, I thought that was somewhat decided. It does look a little off from those pictures, but that could be attributed to stress. You might need to wait until it's settled in to track down/ settle on the exact species.

Yeah. It's still pretty skittish.
