wouldn't you know by 13"?

Here's the story on the Dovii.

The lady at the lfs said the Dovii was orginally purchased at 2" by a long time regular customer and raised in a large 440 gallon community CA tank. The guy had to get rid of his tanks and gave all the fish to them. He told her he cohabitated fine with the others and never bothered anyone. The lfs had him for a week before I came in and she kept referring to him as a big baby and gentle giant even putting her hand in and petting him. After observing him for a couple of days, I believe her.

I know what you guys are going to think because my tank is much smaller than the other guy's 440 but today I took the biggest Jag out of the 265 and put in the 13" Dovii. So far he just swims around checking everything out.

Sometimes you just have to take chances to see what will work. The cichlids in jeopardy are a 10" Jag, 6-7" Grammodes and 4.5" Festae. They have plenty of get away places if the Dovii snaps.

Wish me luck.

Mods please don't move this. The vid is for educational/discussion purposes.

It's the individual fish.. although *most* of the Dovii I have had seem to get along fine during the day but I'll wake up to dead fish. On the other hand my 5.5" male that I currently have is a glass banger and I'm not going to risk any other fish with him.

I imagine he's fairly mellow, surely the previous owner would have let the LFS know of any extreme aggression.

I've known the lady at the lfs for 11 years and she'd tell me straight up if he said so or if she had observed aggression during her time with him.

If they're going to be aggressive glass banging killers, don't they usually snap by what...8"? 10"?

I have two thoughts on this matter. The first is that the LFS lady is right. This guy was raised in a community since being tiny and is well used to tankmates. The second is that he is still getting used to his surroundings and is not comfortable enough to murder everyone yet.

With that said, I believe the first part to be right. Knowing what I know about my fishes, when these and other big guapotes are used to having tankmates, they are generally accepting of tankmates without much trouble other than maybe a little posturing from time to time. It does truly depend on each individual's personality. Yours has a nice one.

All I can say is you are the luckiest guy on MFK right now. A peaceful giant dovii that is so far accepting of tankmates. This is the kind of personality I'm looking for in a dovii to add to my tank.

I am truly envious. Can I have him?:D

Seriously. Can I have him?:naughty:

I feel very lucky right now. We'll see how it works with the Jag. He runs for his life from the Dovii even though the Dovii isn't flaring or anything. He definitely seems very comfortable with tankmates.

EDIT to add-oh and btw, thanks for the post but no you can't have him. :irked:
