If my tanks go down again I swear...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like I said on another thread, I wish you were in north Carolina I have a 1350 watt steel craft right now for $185 brandnew in the box,(never fueled up), and about four other generators to choose from all da way up to 6600Watts!!! I believe if you have invested hundreds of dollars in fish like I have, then you should have a backup plan for power outages!!

This is my single most fear in this hobby, especially in the event I'm not home. Good luck.

I've thought a lot about what I would do. The best I've come up with (In my head) is to run only the heaters all the time, and half of the air pumps half of the time. The idea to put the bio in the tank is a great idea that I haven't thought of before, possibly dump it all into a women's leg nylon<--- or whatever those things are called lol. If you have multiple heaters, you could use some of them for heating treated water that will be readily available for a change.

I know one thing, the fridge better be able to keep cold with the door closed and ice :). On the other hand, we live in the north. It's currently 37 degrees outside, so put the beer in a box outside.

Again, good luck.

I was wondering the same thing? A local weather man?
The storm didn't make this far north so I just had a little rain and some wind. I lost power for 11 days during Sandy. Lost some valuable fish too.

I'd have (and I do, because I live north) styrofoam insulation panels cut for the front and top of my tanks and gorilla tape handy. As soon as power goes out, they are taped to the tanks. Bottom and 3 sides have them on all the time anyway, as they slightly lower my tank heating costs. While they don't hold heat forever, they slow heat loss preventing the drastic fluctuations that kill fish.

Having worked in customer service for one of the leading food providers in the world I can tell you... if the fridge remains closed it can maintain temp with no power for four hours... that being said... if it is less than 40°F outside why not stick your food in a cooler on the back porch, unplug the fridge, and run the tank for a bit? If not you could always alternate between fridge, furnace, & fish. I'm willing to bet that my generator is larger than yours. If you have shipping heat packs you could activate a few and tape them to the glass in a pinch or get some hot hands packs to tape to it. It would really help if you had a battery operated digital laser temperature gun to monitor with. Most people I know got theirs at Harbor Freight for like $25... personally, I swiped my boyfriend's out of his race car shop. Lol

+1 on duanes styro idea - it works well.

If you don't have battery powered air pumps, you can manually aerate the water by scooping and pouring back in with a cup every couple of hours. If your tanks aren't crazy overstocked you should be fine. I lost power for 36hours during Sandy and only lost a few fry.

goodluck, i lost power for almost near 3 days during nemo but all my fish pullled through hope yours do aswell

Storms gone, everything worked out fine. Generators are not a problem I'm a commercial contractor. I have generators that I tow behind my truck. The problem is going to get it from the warehouse in the thick of it. I'd rather not risk my own safety for a couple hundred bucks in fish

I think I'd move away from Jersey after everything that has happened there this year
