its hard to choose one, i love parachromis but man the umbee has some nice coloring and personality from what if seen, but i have to choose dovii

I had 3 doviis and 2 umbees and a host of other juvenile cichlids in 1 tank...only have 1 dovii and no umbees right now due to aggression, the umbees were the smallest ones in the tank and stood up to any fish that came their way vs the dovii that doesnt even chase anyone...my only dovii left is about 3 inchs now and nobody bothers him n he doesnt bother anyone...as far as looks he is really plain vs my umbees were barely an inch already showing blue freckles...if I had a tank big enough to keep either one for life it would definetly be the umbee and it doesnt really matter what collection point they all are from theyre all really cool

I would keep an umbee over dovii any day of the week. Of course this is my opinion but umbees are far more beautiful even though I have seen a couple dovii that are very nice as well but they seem to be much fewer and further between than umbees in that category. The only other thing that detracts me from keeping a dovii at the moment is that everyone seems to be keeping them right now. It really boils down to your personal preferrence and what you are looking for in a fish, as long as it's a cichlid everything will be fine 
I have always preferred umbees but I caught the dovii fever last winter and have both currently. Even though the dovii is only 9" or so there is no doubt on my mind which I prefer. Umbees just have it all and even though the dovii is an awesome fish, for me it isn't even in the same class. When I watch my big male you can see the wheels turning as he cruises. Both are striking but few dovii are truly beautiful. And the females come no where near comparing IMO. Both are very predatory but seeing a large umbee explode across an entire tank to make the kill is extremely impressive. I recommend both but if I have to choose the umbee in all its variants wins hands down. As Jeff rapps said they are the unsung kings of the cichlid world!

I have to make that decision soon. I have one 4" male Nic Dovii and two 3" rio mag umbees unsexed. I'm only buying one 240 tank. The Dovii has great colors right now and better personality then the umbee.
