Fish will eat when they're hungry, and by hungry, I don't mean not eating for a day or two :grinno: As long as we make sure they're in healthy condition before we pull them off their favorite food source, it should be ok. Just don't starve them to the point of no return :grinno: Someone got to fold :ROFL::ROFL: Show them who's the boss :headbang2

Show them who's boss.....LMAO.... I'll surely remember that as I vacuum thier poo. I think by simply having fish you agree to be an obedient slave to THEM..... Not only am I going to show them whos boss but when I'm done with them they're gonna make me a sandwich.... or better yet a smeltwich.

Scombs, 3"- 4"

Competition and learning from others. Started with live shrimp the competition were Nandus Nandus leaf fish. The Nandus are very quick to grab the shrimp and the scomb was having to be quick to get any food. Over a period of two to three weeks. I started to put in slithers of fish which the Nandus ignored. Once he got the taste for it he started taking relitively large chunks of fish.

Tats,

I have had different expearences with different Tat's I had one that was very difficult to break and some that eat frozen pretty much as they enterered the water.

Again the method for me was to put the Tat with compertition. I ensured I gave it some live food every now and again to keep it nourished.

Patients is the key with any of these guys, or any fish for that matter.

I do firmly believe that straight up starving then throwing in unrecognized food is just going to lead to a dead fish......How is it supposed to know what to eat if it's not recognized as food?

I had a tat starve for 3 weeks strait after feeding it feeders as much as he wanted for a week. He was in with 3 freshwater barracuda's and I threw the smelt (still likes smelt best) in the current so it would pass him while he was hanging out on his favourite spot. He likes the heads better then other parts, probably because of the eyes. The barra's where eating dead the second day after starving started, so it still took long for the payara to eat, but I have noticed no problems at all from the starving, but this could be different for every fish depending on what he'd eaten before, so no guarantee it will work for you as well.

You say the barra's started eating the 2nd day..... That to me would be an example of a "teacher" fish. Would you agree? What I was referring to is throwing a lone fish in say a qt tank by itself and starving......

It still took him nearly 3 weeks to eat (while the barra's where already eating) and only if he hadn't eaten some days before and if the piece of smelt came right in front of his face on the current.

My Tats went from feeders to river shrimp to mussels (as they have a strong scent) then to chopped up whitebait/fish fillet, prawns etc. Quite easy I thought! My aro gave them a run around when feeding!

when getting my large armatus off live, he would beg for food in the same spot every day.

i went from live goldfish to frozen goldfish then to shrimp.

he would get so hungry he would eventually eat whatever i threw in his spot.

i was recently having problems with my armatus eating. i couldnt figure out what the heck was wrong.....

i didnt think this was possible but he wasnt interested in the shrimp anymore because they were too small....

i have to get him colossal shrimp in order for him to eat now.

just a heads up to everyone...
