ill never use melafix again!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will vouge for Melafix as it has worked wonders for me numerous times. However, I want to point out that i don't use Melafix by itself. Instead, i use salt, higher temperatures, and Melafix together. Combined, they make a very effective treatment that is unmatched...;). If you wish to further this, you can also add PimaFix to the concoction, but normally its not neccessary to do so.

This is a little off topic but I always laugh when someone says something is safe because it only contains natural ingredients. Both nicotine and botulin toxins are natural as well and both will kill everything in the tank.

Hell guppy, botulin will kill every human on the planet if let loose en masse!!!!!:nilly:

I still swear by melafix...............and clean water.......and proper parameters......:)

I find MelaFix about as helpful as poo. In my experience, it is a product to use when people want to feel as if they are doing something rather than nothing. I've not found it to assist at all with bacterial infections, either internal or external (contrary to the label). It does smell nice, but oxygen-challenged fish can often suffer great stress when subjected to it and/or PimaFix. PimaFix has NEVER solved a fungal problem. True fungal problems are not very common, so misusing this product is a major concern.

Salt, heat, and quarantine are the way to go.

I've only used melafix once to cure a oscar of what people told me was a fungus. It didn't work. The O stayed sick for three weeks than died. I don't think its worth it. Some people swear by it and other don't use it. I swear by salt and raised temp. More gentle and affective.

Hope I never have to use more than slat and heat... Main problem in UT is temp flux ... And that usually doesn't affect ther tanks :) But when it does ich sometimes hits.. Though not had a problem in the main show tank for more than 3 years.. last ich was in the 20 outside my house whern the first part of winter came and one heater wasn't enough... Curred the female lost the male...

Well lately when I did use melafix the fish did end up dieing but like it was said, perhaps I used wrong doses or the obivious.....the fish just couldnt be saved!
all I know is that stuff has a strong smell

I'd heard that melafix could be used on anything because it was a stress-reducer, and that it couldn't really be overdosed because it was organic or whatever. Well, I used it because my fish were flicking, and less than the full dose just in case. The next day my ghost knife was dead, no scratches, no sunkenness, just dead. We dosed again with both pima and mela and the next day my multipunctatus was dead, looking very pale so you could tell he was dead.

My lfs told me it was definitely the melafix that killed them, and that its made from melaleuca (tea tree oil) which is toxic to many animals. It causes the fish to create a thicker slime coat on themselves, because its toxic, which in turn protects them from other nasty things. Salt does this too, btw, and thats all I'll use from now on.
