Heres some ideas for you to think about:

1. Releasing debris back into the tank from the filter pad will have no negative affect on the nitrogen cycle. The debris is still in the tank/ filter regardless if it is trapped in the foam, or at the bottom of the tank.

2. The ammonia insert is not necessary as long as your nitrogen cycle is complete or you have the correct amount of biological media to support your bio load.

3. Your small spike in ammonia came from you replacing foam pads with new ones, and probably means you need more bio media (which you added so great)

4. What is up with prime? It seems like everyone here uses it and talks about it. I never have and my opinion is that if your tank is corrctly maintained and cycled, you don't need to add anything but dechlorinated/demineralized water.

Just my .02. I think you made this more complicated than you needed to. Good luck.

Creepyoldguy is right on (although I too use Prime (super concentrated and chloramine in the water))...... I don't know why you were freaking out lol... just some junk floating around in the water that was there to begin with anyway....

Why's that?

You sometimes come off as more judgemental then helpfull. :p But when you do give advise, It's solid.

Oh yeah and I don't use prime because a small bottle is insanely expensive comparitavely. and I pour shots of conditioner like I do whiskey... I'de go threw way more prime then need be and just be dumping it down the proverbial drain. That and I have Very high levels of metals in my local water. So I use a water conditioner that I found works best for my situation.

Been there, done that...a few times even. It clears up quickly :)

I use Prime. It was suggested to me once and I have had no issues at all since using it. During water changes, I use water straight from the tap with a shot of Prime. I have gone as high as 50% in tanks of several sizes. One capful treats 50 gallons...so yeah, its a bit pricey, but it goes a long, long way.

Maybe it isn't required, but in the end, its pretty cheap insurance :)

I've done this before...sadly more than once. Whats really troubling is when that crap jets of the filter some of my fish eat it, YUK! Never had a death from it though.

When changing filter sponge it's recomended that you leave the old sponge in the tank too help seed the new one.(this is probably why your tank is going through a small cycle)

why do people keep saying prime is expensive? its 8 bucks for the smaller bottle that treats 2500 gallons.
the tetra stuff, stress coat both cost 10-12 and do less water.
8.5oz prime = $8, 2500gal
16oz stress coat = 10.99, 946gal
theres a tetra bottle around here somewhere but i dont feel like finding it.

Only other stuff i found close to prime and i have no idea where to find it again as it came with a used tank was a small bottle of API Dr something that treated 1 gal per tiny drop.

Haha, well what can I say?! I tend not to follow suit in the whole "2 fx5's on your 125" theory as most do on this site. Thanks for saying that when I do give advice, its good advice. That's good to hear!

IF prime is cheaper, I'll use it by any means! I never knew anything about it and did little research on it. I get the nova aqua junk when its on sale at petsmart. for $18, i can treat almost 8000 i think.
