I have an airpump, albeit a noisy one and a large sponge already so that's no issue. A 10 gal is about 10-15 dollars depending on exchange. I got my 70 for 60 USD at the timeDepending on the size of the poly, you could get a ten gallon tank cheap with a sponge filter (at least around here they're like 13 bucks), just get it cycled and good to go, then you could get young poly and grow it out in there until it's big enough to add to the group. Then again you live in South Africa, so pricing for aquarium equipment could be insane there. Stateside the pet chain Petco has dollar per gallon sales, so it's easy to go out 3-4 times a year and stock up on tanks for all the different fish projects. If only I had a home with more square footage ...![]()

Yep, I'm ordering one soonish. tugging between a Del or one of the palmasWell at least you've got polys on the same continent![]()
Yeah, best way to keep things consistent, too many swings and you stress them out. If you've got any questions let me know! You could easily keep one in a 20 Long btw, 40 breeder is good if you've got 2 or 3, and obviously if you have the space a 30 or 40 breeder would certainly be appreciated by any animal, I just know lots of folks keep their single fish in a 20 long. Only benefit to a smaller tank is ease and cost of cooling it, the bigger you go and the less insulated the tank the more the chiller has to run. Also you won't want to fill the tank to the top, they come to the surface to breathe like a poly would, so leaving them a decent air gap is a good idea... I leave about 2-3 inches at the top of the 40 gallonThanks for the info! Sounds like a chiller would be the best bet...
Pretty much either would work in the same size tank. My polli is a lot of fun, though anything from the palmas family are cool looking. If you're looking at dels though, I've got to say, WC looks sooooooooo much better than CB, the CBs get so fat in the midsection they end up looking like scaley tadpoles... not a flattering look imoYep, I'm ordering one soonish. tugging between a Del or one of the palmas
I'll have to see what I can get my hands on, although which is the most active in your experience? The palmas polli is one of my most active fish, him and the albino sen cruise around a lot. The del pretty much sits around until feeding time, though I've heard plenty of people say their dels have been really active... just not my experience with any of the ones I've kept. When they're little they'll all be pretty inactive though, they hide a lot... once they get to be about 4-5 inches and get some girth to them they get a lot more brashI'll have to see what I can get my hands on, although which is the most active in your experience? Maybe a polli is the one for me, looks great on a dark substrate as well. How are polypterus on other bottom dwellers? Never kept a poly with a knife honestly, you don't want anything slim with a poly though (Like a dojo loach or anything). Synodontis catfish are generally considered pretty safe since they're pretty heavy bodied. However, you're looking at getting an upper jaw... they're not as proficient at murdering fish since their mouth doesn't really have the capacity to snatch anything even close to their circumference. Honestly depending on the size of the knife I'd be more concerned with it bullying the poly than vice-versaMaybe a polli is the one for me, looks great on a dark substrate as well.
