Since you have mentioned some of the awesome tanks you seem here why not replicate what you see. We all need a chanllege every once a while.

Idk, I'm not sure if I'm ready. I really feel like a novice right now, I've spent way too much time in the lounge.

Do some Severums and angels. Get the Severums small so they can grow. And a bigger schooling fish like turquoise or bosemanis would be awesome in my opinion

I think you need to do a little soul-searching. If the boredom will be cured 100% by the aesthetics of the tank then ok, but I would recommend evaluating exactly what you enjoy about this hobby before investing any more money. I'm being serious, I see a lot of people on here start off with a tiny tank and don't stop until they have a multi-thousand gallon plywood build with GIANT fish in it. Sometimes it's just fun until the tank is setup and boring to maintain and I see plenty of "leaving the hobby" threads where people realize they aren't enjoying the hobby unless they are buying something new and flashy, upgrading for that ONE FISH that will finally make them happy etc.. just figure out what you want out of the hobby and get that. I keep saying this but the most important factor in the longevity of the fish's setup is the owner. What do YOU want and what will you be happy with for a long time because it's a lot of work to care for these fish properly.

What I really enjoy from the fish hobby is enjoying watching them, which I'm not getting right now. That's why I want to change everything up. Trust me, I'm not leaving the hobby any time soon, I just need to spark things up.

I think the real problem is I didn't truly think about things enough and wasn't patient enough when I started (I was 15). I just wanted to start everything up as fast as I could, so I never really was able to make the tank "mine" because I used all the old decorations from the person I got the tank from. I want to redo everything to make it feel more like my kind of tank.

I would suggest doing some research and finding that one fish that really sticks out to you (that will live comfortably in a 55 of course) and build the rest of the tank around it. I did the exact same thing you did. I rushed through the process because all I wanted was a fish tank setup. It took me many years to realize what I like and now I am deeper in the hobby than ever. I literally think about ways to make my fish more comfortable and make a better looking tank on a daily basis. It’s an addiction to me at this point, but it’s all because I found what I like and never looked back. It’s tough making a decision that you feel has to be the right one, due to the longevity of raising and keeping a fish but that’s what I love about fish keeping. You WILL make mistakes (we all have) but it’s a learning process and a really fun one if you can just figure out what it is that makes you tick. Don’t be afraid to step up. You will be glad you did.

Having said all that, I would suggest earth eaters and some other non-aggressive cichlids like acara, severum, ect. I have a tank with Geophagus Tapajos, clown loaches, roseline sharks, and an acara. I couldn’t be happier with the setup. My tank is a little bigger at 120 gallons but you get the idea.

Best of luck!

Sounds good then! I like someones previous post of taking a crack at making your own version of a tank you really like. Whats your favorite tank you have seen?
