Seachem™ Matrix™ Biofilter Media

i just did the media add about 2 weeks ago and have not cleaned it.

Do you have sponges or biomax in your AC filters? When you clean you filters and media do you use tank water or tap water?

thats what bugs me... is im doing everything right...everything ive done ive consulted on here...im ready to sell off my tanks and get another kitty cat lol. which sucks because i really am into fish now

Speaking of cats.....a litter box is one of the #1 odd causes of ammonia readings in fish tanks. Unless it's cleaned out religiously every single day that's a real possibility right there. Get down 6" away from the litter box, can you smell ammonia? If you can smell it the fish tank water is absorbing it. An easy way to find out.....set a glass of water next to the little box for 24 hrs, set another glass outside. Then test both for ammonia after 24 hrs.

Let's look at this logically first and then go into the reasons. If your problem started a month ago and you started using Stresscoat a month ago, it stands to reason that the Stresscoat is causing your problem.

If your town uses chloramines in it's water, instead of chlorine, the Stresscoat is producing the ammonia as it breaks the bond of the chloramine. You NEED to use AMMO LOCK 2 to detoxify the ammonia. More water changes with the same product are just adding more ammonia to your tank. Stop doing water changes until you either get the Ammo Lock 2 or switch to a conditioner like Prime that converts the ammonia to ammonium that is dealt with much more effeciently by your biofilter and is much less harmful to fish.

+1
go pick up some prime stat

stresscoat isnt too good. prime is better.
You should pre-mix the water before adding it to the tank.
I got a big plastic bin (think it maybe a hamper?) and a simple waterpump to mix the water and condition and pump it back in the tank.
Its an extra step, but you can still use your pyhton and it can eliminate negative effects of tap water and eliminate the negative buildup of crap left by water treatments, which could contribute to negative tank parameters.
i learned this on MFK ;)

i have what came in the box for my aquaclears. thats what i use.

i just went and got ammo lock. im gonna do a water change and use that. i already had different tap water conditioner.

i never knew that about cat boxes...but my litter box is on the 3rd floor my fish tanks are on the first..although i am gonna do the water in a cup experiment. cuz thats sounds freaking cool lol.

30-50% wc

once you drop the water level and yer filters syphon themselves dry be sure to add fill them back up with tank water.. being exposed to the air and drying out will kill off the BB faster than a bullet and cause ammonia spikes

As long as the bio-media stays damp the bacteria can and will survive as soon as it dry's out then you have a serious issue.
