Wow, these animals are at two extremely different ends of the size chart. Look at it this way, one you could keep for life in a 10 gallon aquarium and the other you could keep for life in a enclosure the size of your living room. I'd get some more experience under your belt before you jump into large varanidae keeping.
Ditto:D

Mangroves are really shaky as compared to niles, and will likely run before biting u most of the time, i have experience with both, and i kno it takes alot of comitement thats why i dont have them anymore.Mangroves are beautiful semi arboreal and aquatic monitors.

U dont need a enclosure the size of a living room for a mangrove, they reach 4 feet on average.a nile is another story. If u do get one make sure u have a enclosure with a big enough water bowl to fit its whole body.

Gee wiz, seth got lots of props on that, dang guys just blow his head right up why dont ya.lol.I think a viper gecko could crawl right up the monitors nostrils. Both are cool but why not get an ackies instead? And if you did the vipers I would for sure get a trio or something and make a cool looking 20 long desert settup.

I'm aware they don't need a living room sized enclosure, I was kind of exaggerating. But monitors are some of the most intelligent reptiles out there and it would be ashame to keep such a smart, active animal in a small, aquarium sized tank.

:D What can I say Jason, every dog has it's day. I by no means am trying to stop the original poster from getting a monitor. It's just that their choice of animals are at two entirely different ends of the spectrum. It just sounds like they need to do more research into what they really want. Ackies would be a much better choice of speices to get. I know they're pricey but they are much more manageable then an adult mangrove.

i wasent intending that towards u vicious_fish,i was letting him kno, because most people think all monitors need a apartment complex for a enclousure.:)

I love african fat tailed geckos, might be something to look into.

I had a AFT gecko for awhile. Was docile in the store, but after he settled in at my place became a little hellian. I couldn't go near him without hearing him his and snap at me. Made it really hard to clean his tank.
