I'm getting another lizard soon...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are a cool species though, definately different from a beardie or leopard gecko.

I know these herps at at opposites on the char tbut I like them both. I want a red ackies but there is a mangrove in my local pet shop I want to rescue. Poor guy is almost a foot long and living in a 20 gallon long tank :(
I just really want to save the fellow. The viper geckos attracted me mainly for the size and cuteness, and I've been wanting to try my luck with geckos.

The mangrove is abused there as well FYI. I asked one of the employees if I could see him and he told me he was hiding. So he jammed the poor guys water dish into his side to scare him out. He knows nothing on herps, he thought mangroves got 6 feet and didn't know tegus are related (and reach a similar length). They even have a red tegu for sale.

My enclosure plans were a tank roughly 5' high,8' long, 5' wide. If you guys have better dimensions then help me out!I'll be building it myself (it will be a sectional cage broken into 2-4 pieces based on dimensions. I'll be saving for the next couple months to start the project if I decide to save him).

Also, the larger of my beardies (the female) established dominance yesterday. She did her whole head-bobbing thing.

Don't go there then and tell others not to. Reptile keeping is a small world.

I usually go to the pet smart near here (they're actually VERY good where I am) but the PJ's in the mall has such a larger selection. I can't leave him there :( No animal should have to suffer that. I'm pretty adamant now in getting him. Just have to convince my mom.

I know that buying him seems like the best plan in saving that animals life but that pet store jerk will just have another one next week, hoping another kid like you will fell bad and purchase it. And so the cycle continues....

I know they had a peach throat that sold quickly but the herp community up here is pretty small. I just can't stand the thought of him rotting in that tank being mistreated like that. If I do get him I'll wait a bit and check if they get a new monitor in, if they do I'll warn somebody on how they treat them.

You are missing the point. The absolute WORSE thing you can do is "save" that monitor. You are NOT saving it by purchasing it. Like stated they will only get more in. The best thing you can do is not purchasing it and having it die and the store will be out money for it.

If you don't agree with the stores view on the welfare of it's animals, then don't give them your business and encourage others to do the same. They'll have another one in next week, you going to save that one to? Your lining some guys pocket and encouraging the cycle. Oh wait, is this sounding like a broken record now?

Well I've decided to look around a bit. I'll hope I can find a monitor elsewhere :\
Monitors are a bit of a rarity up here but damn PJ's Pet Centre for being so terrible!(they have an utterly terrible reputation up here).
If all else fails I can get a couple more beardies or a green basilisk.
