Ever since I have switched to a sand substrate for my aquarium, my Aquaclear 70 filter has been humming really loudly. Somehow, sand is getting into the filter and grinding against the propeller. This causes the propeller to wear down, so I am replacing it for the second time in less than two months. How can I prevent this from happening?

Shorten the intake tube. That is what I had to do on my Emperors and an XP3, solved the noise but when I clean them there is still a little sand in the bottom buit all is working fine.

Ok, I'll try the foam. I also have another question. In a lot of the photos I see, everyone's tanks are crystal clear. I have never really been able to acheive this with my tank. I have also seen crystal clear freshwater tanks at some local fish stores (They seemed to have protein skimmers in them) These tanks look like High Defenition. Do Protein skimmers make a difference in freshwater? My 120 gallon tank will be fairly clear for maybe a day or two, but it always seems to end up cloudy. I don't think I am overfeeding my fish. My filtration includes a Rena XP 3 and an Aquaclear 70 hang on. I was just wondering how I might be able to produce crystal clear water.

Can you tell me more about the wet/dry? I don't think my tank is overstocked. It's a 120 gallon with a pair of Parachromis Loisellei, a Cobra Pike, and a striped raphael catfish.

Lots of reasons why your tank may look cloudy. how far is the intake from the sand itself? foam is always a good option.
