I'm going to kill my filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The intake is about 18" from the sand itself. Will putting styrofoam on the filter affect it's efficiency? Also, would anyone else recomend a wet/dry filter?

I reccomend BIO Wheel Wet/Dry filters. Ya know. The Penguin and Emperor series. A couple of Emperor 400s on your tank will probably make the difference. Also, just slip a piece of panty hose over the intake and fasten it with a rubberband. Don't stretch it over the intake as when you stretch it, you make the holes bigger. This will serve as a prefilter to keep sand and plant matter out of your filter, and you will also be able to lengthen the time between filter cleanings. Just wash it when your filter loses flow. This is also great for use on fry tanks.

Can you tell me more about the wet/dry? I don't think my tank is overstocked. It's a 120 gallon with a pair of Parachromis Loisellei, a Cobra Pike, and a striped raphael catfish.

the wet dry might be much, they are very effecent, but somewhat expensive, get more filtration on the tank definetly, i reccomend, another powerfilter, ac 70, or 110, and add a canister filter such as a rena filstar xp3 or the like.

If you do buy an AC, make sure you check the filter daily as I had one overflow the back and sides while I was at school the other day. It spilled 3+ gallons of water on the floor. It was fine when I left. Also, the BioMax disintegrated in mine, which makes me choose Whisper over these, but Penguin and Emperor over the Whisper.

Ok, I'll look into some of those filters. I just have one more question. Just recently, these small white things have been growing on the sides of my tank. I scrub them off with every tank cleaning, but they always start growing back. They are really tiny, but come togtether give my tank a cloudier appearance. Any Idea what it is?

You have me stumpped on that one. Do they look like worms or some kind of bug? I used to have a prob with a white film growing on the walls of my tank, but it just turned to green algae over time. I left it on the back to see what it came out to be.

I don't think its some kind of bug. It just looks like a white coating. About the Wet/dry filter. What kind would you guys recommend for a 120 gallon. My birthday is coming up soon, so I'm considering getting one.

I have also seen crystal clear freshwater tanks at some local fish stores (They seemed to have protein skimmers in them) These tanks look like High Definition. Do Protein skimmers make a difference in freshwater?

looks like you've had your first question answered .
Protein skimmers have no use at all on fresh water unless you require aeration and water flow
increase..
