Ok, I'll try the foam. I also have another question. In a lot of the photos I see, everyone's tanks are crystal clear. I have never really been able to acheive this with my tank. I have also seen crystal clear freshwater tanks at some local fish stores (They seemed to have protein skimmers in them) These tanks look like High Defenition. Do Protein skimmers make a difference in freshwater? My 120 gallon tank will be fairly clear for maybe a day or two, but it always seems to end up cloudy. I don't think I am overfeeding my fish. My filtration includes a Rena XP 3 and an Aquaclear 70 hang on. I was just wondering how I might be able to produce crystal clear water.

What kind of "cloudiness" does your tank have? if its floating particles and stuff, increased mechanical filtration is your best bet.

sad:( kill your filter, kill your fish...
sorry to hear it.. I use penguin and magnum, no problems...

From the sounds of things you have plenty of filtration, I would recommend more frequent filter cleanings. I bet if you open your canister up, you will see a lot of detritus in the filter.

I clean out my filters once a week, and replace the media about once a month. The cloudyness is most noticable when up close to the tank. When looking at fish in the back, the vision just seems a little foggy. (And Yes, My eyes are fine)

you shouldnt have to service your filters weekly if they are working right. in many cases i have found that it takes a while after working on a filter for the tank to become crystal clear again. but i suspect that your cloudyness is caused by the fish stirring up the fine particles of sand. as sand sits on the bottom of the tank the water flow slowly vibrates them and they break into smaller peices and into a dust. this happens very slowly but does happen.

do you do weekly water changes of about 20%? the new water should help keep your tank clear

its perty well agreed upon that w/d filters are the most effective but not always needed. the choice is yours but with the fact that you already have some other filtration i would probably just get another hob like a penguin or emperor (marineland)

goodluck

Dude, i got HUGE foam blocks on my AC intakes. The sand i use is Synthetic,it's sooooo small,it gets through the foam.My AC's Humm too.All you can do is remove the sand like i did.Trust me,with the sand being like 4 microns around, your not gonna stop 'em from gettting into the impellar without MAJOR flow restriction
.Cheesecloth would be my only idea. And wrap it a good couple times.Word!

Sorry to be dragging this forum on for so long, but I would just like some confirmation. I plan on upgrading my aquaclear 70 to a 110. Along with my Rena XP3, will this be enough filtration for my tank?
