Im having a goldfish mania!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just watch that that common doesn't pick at the fantails. I've heard the single tailed goldfish can do a number on fantails because if they start picking the fantail is too slow to escape. Normally I don't worry about it in the young'uns like that but I see the common is much larger than the others so just keep an eye out. ;) I've spotted many a fantail mixed with other goldies that was missing a half of his fan.
Then again, my aunt has a large goldfish tank with mature fish and she's got all white fantails and several comets, probably a dozen fish, and she has no problems so what do I know, lol.

*edit
Btw, do love the setup. Reminds me how badly I want to put one in my kitchen. Stupids husband has a "no building lakes indoors" attitude..

nice, so no firemoiuths i take it?

yea no firemouths :(. i kinda like goldfish more now.

iloveoscars702 does PFS mean play sand? if so yes im using that as substrate.

Hmmmmmm, I've got a 100 gallon rubbermaid cattle trough sitting around, and just yesterday my girlfriend and her daughter were commenting on how they thought the channel cat in my 55 was getting picked on. Maybe I can talk them into setting it up for channel cat, and then adding some fantails later. I think that three or four fantails would do well, maybe a couple of snails, placed in a sunny area with some spatterdock and PFS substrate...........
Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Dang MFK, alway's making me set up more tanks and stuff!

not really. the common goldfish i got was from walmart that was like $3 something. and the two orandas were $4 each.

Wow you've got it easy. And you think that is expensive :screwy: Wait until you get into polys, dats, aros, rays, pbass etc

Beautiful set-up and wonderful for your fish while they are still young! Though, unless you are fixing on an upgrade, I wouldn't get any more fish. ;)

Actually, you'll have to upgrade eventually anyways. Fantails are one of the bigger-growing fancy goldfish varieties, and generally need a good 20g each (some say 20g for the first and 10g for each after that, but between the growth potential and waste output I disagree) at maturity. They can get upwards of 12" over the course of their lifespan, which is a pretty big goldfish, though 6-10" is more common if being kept in a tank rather than a pond.

You'll definitely need bigger digs for the singletail as it grows. They easily exceed a foot and can push 20" in a pond setting. My common goldfish went from an inch to a foot in just a few years - and I consider him stunted due to poor care earlier in his lifespan! His sons are only 1.5-2y.o. and are pushing 7" - and they were not raised strictly indoors in warm conditions like he was!

I love goldies. I have a 300g for my three common goldfish, and a 75g for my four fancies (will probably be upgrading to a 100g since I have another in QT). One of my goldies has no eyes but he still navigates beautifully. Awesome animals.
