How large are your Piranha? In my experience their appetite decreases dramatically around the 5'' mark. Mine would eat like pigs from half-dollar size until about 4-5''. When smaller it wasn't uncommon for the 5 of them to consume 20-25 shrimp a day.

Today they might eat 8-10 shrimp every 2-3 days and sometimes less than that. Also, you might check your temperatures. I keep mine around 83 degrees.

 Hold your horses cowboy!!!!:nilly: I told you to do a 30% water change every 10 days not daily for god's sake!!!!.:screwy:

Those daily water changes are doing nothing but stressing your P's therefore they are not eating....

Do what you are told to do and try not to add wrong ideas to what you are told. :irked:
That's a rather hypocritical statement considering it came from someone who just recently posted ''Geee man, every day one learns something new!''

For starters I've yet to see your name in the scientific journals as the all-know, wise epitome of Piranha care and information. Secondly there are simply too many unknowns in this case to toss out a demanding statement such as ''Do as you're told.'' I mean, is this a 30 gallon tank with 10 - 11'' Pygos and you're telling him to do a 30% water change every 10 days and not daily else he's a rube? What type of feeding regimen are the fish on? What are the characteristics of each individual fish?

I've found that virtually no two fish are identical and each has their likes/dislikes and there's probably very few set-ups that are identical as well.

So did I miss the Gods of Piranha swooping down from the heavens and crowning you the Master of Piranha Keeping? Do you know all there is to know about Piranha behavior to the extent that the rest of us are nothing but simple-minded half-brights that annoy you with valid questions? I mean after all, this is supposedly a forum dedicated to providing accurate information on proper care and husbandry of Piranha and a place in which should be comfortable for a Piranha keeper both new and old to ask questions of such....

There's simply TOO many ''Master Gurus'' on online forums of every description that feel as their way is the only way and anyone trying something new is a foolish rube.

In honor of Mothers' Day I'd just like to say; If you have nothing good to say, just don't say anything.

After reading that I realize I might be a little on edge from a lot of negative comments on Piranha forums. That and it's probably a good idea to proofread before hitting the ''Add Reply'' button.

I just don't think any two Piranha are a like and need to be treated as such. I have both Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus genus Piranha and each has his own personality and traits. If I were to generalize and treat all the same then some would be somewhat unhappy/disapointed.

There is a tremendous lack of information on virtually every species of Piranha and even some yet to be even discovered. Where would we be if keepers were to say back in the 40's; ''Hey, we know everything about these fish. No need to try to learn more.''? I'm sure we'll look back 50 years from now and see a lot of painfully incorrect ''laws'' about Piranha.

As keepers we need to concentrate on continuous learning and advancing the hobby as a whole rather than sitting on forums playing armchair experts. I guess I'm just fustrated with all the supposed ''can'ts'' that are thrown around.

Amen. I respect the fact that your doing that brandtii project. I think alot of people that post on forums (probably myself included) can be a bit pedantic about piranhas. Nevertheless I think that when somebody comes here asking for general piranha keeping advice, it would be irresponsible to tell people to just try anything. I think we should be respectful when doing it however, but if somebody says "hey I'm new to piranha, just picked up 5 RBPs and rhom. They're all in my 55g tank. They're about 6-7 inches in length. I'm feeding them bloodworms and they won't eat. What am I doing wrong?" I think it would be irresponsible to not give them some sort of advice. I do agree however that we should try to avoid labeling ourselves as "experts." That is unless your an ichthyologist specializing in piranhas, or you've been in the hobby for 20+ years.

Just my .02. :)

Although I cringe when reading such a post and a very wide array of sarcastic/possibly humorous responses come to my head I refrain. Usually at that point I look back at when I fish seriously started keeping fish. At that point I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily I went on to keep virtually every Cichlid and Marine fish known to man as well as some pretty incredible reef set-ups. I could never have Piranha [legally] due to living in Florida. I came back to Ohio and it was on.

Anyway, even though I learned an endless vat of knowledge from other keepers, websites and forums, nothing trumps experience. I've done many things that ''they'' said could never be done. I might still be keeping Black Moor Goldfish in a bowl if I never got the urge to go on to bigger and better....

Being a fan of literature, you should see the significance of the quote in my signiture line. Ole' Crowley may have been a madman in his own way, he was also brilliant and wrote some pretty heavy writings. That quote is probably my all-time favorite quote of any writer I know about.

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law" - The law of thalema

I am familiar with mr crowley. I would agree that nothing trumps experience, but as my man Husserl used to say, "experience by itself is not science." :grinno:

well it's bed time for me. I've got finals in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Good luck man! What are you studying btw?
