What kind of gar is it? It looks like a spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus).

You were probably lucky that you had a gar in transport as they can accept lower temperatures. A real "tropical" fish might have bit the dust.

What temp was the water at when he arrived?

Burt, the water temp was 60F. I never thought it could stay warm with temp out side at 40F, and who knows how much colder in other parts where it was lost.
