If I remember correctly, St. Christopher was allowed to retire after Vatican II. Too many people were just sticking him on their dash boards w/out actually doing their part... This sort of thing, IMHO, is a partnership between the saint invoked, and the people invoking doing their best.

But that's just me..

What suprises me, yet was what I was hoping for, was that he would get cold enough to go somewhat dormant, but not to the point of "too dormant". That delicate balance was made and happy ending.
