But you were not intentionally and chronically dysfunctional.
The OP was talking about using gov't support to support drug habits.
I have walked a mile. I have from time to time dropped out and lived on the street. About 5yrs total. I have been there, seen that.

No one has downed a person like yourself You are the kind of person that people like to help. He/we are pissy with the people who get pregnat to have a bigger welfare check.



I remeber one time Me and my g/f were in wal-mart and there was this family in front of us in line at the check out. the lady looked fresh from the salon. Matching clothes all the way down to her shoes. Hair done VERY nice nails done. looked like someone whos wants for nothing. Her assuming husband has a union worker constuction jackets on. Looks the hardworking blue collar type. well when they were checking out they set a bunch of stuff off to the side. and paid for it seperate with W.I.C. My g/f asked me what they were doing. I told her I'd tell her later.
Well when they left and we left I told her what that family did. And she was HOT she didn't get why someone who was getting money from Me and her needed it when she had to have had $500 worth of clothing on to go to wal-mart. I told her that's life and We would NEVER be able to get that kind of help b/c she owns a house and the gov will tell you to sell your house and rent before they will help you.


It's not fair.




And before anyone thinks I don't know the hardships take this into consideration.....My parents got a divorce when I was in second grade and my sister in 5th My mom has told us now that we are grown that the first year we were on our own she supported two kids on 7K for a whole years. Without gov aid. So I know hardship and HATE ones who abuse it.
 
Unexpected things happen in life. Sometimes good people need a little help.
But some people think it is not a good idea to be expanding your family when you know very well you can't pay for what you have.
Some people think that way. Like the people who pay taxes.
 
Very sensitive and multifaceted issue.
I agree that the system is abused, and its sickening. Considering what more deserving people live like across the globe.
I also agree that some may come into hard times, have kids or whatever. But why do you deserve a handout for your bad choices? Don't us hard workers deserve handouts for our good choices?

Exactly.
I was from a small city with limited employment options. I worked three simultaneous jobs at two gas stations and as a janitor. The gov't would have gladly paid for excellent retraining programs. But I wasn't unemployed enough to qualify. Only those who had no desire to work got help getting jobs they didn't want.
 
Social welfare programs are abused at times, like everything else in this world.

But what would the point be of living in a society unless there were benefits to everyone - including the down-and-outs? If it is every man for himself, why not revert back to a feudal system.

I wouldn't be surprised if the money loss due to welfare abuse is a fraction of that wasted in bogus wars, tax breaks to corporations and the super-rich, pollution, etc.

But it is easier to point fingers at problems that people "know everything about", b/c they once saw someone in Wal-Mart buying nice clothes with a welfare cheque.

Hey, I live in Canada and have seen terrible abuse from the government welfare handed out to Natives... I don't consider my observations the norm though!

There have got to be better ways to solve problems than throwing money at them, but if you keep cutting off funding for all social programs and keep the mentality that the poor are inherently weaker, lazier, etc. and "if they really wanted to they could succeed"... then how are people going to progress?!

"Teach a man to fish", yet people still would complain about their tax money going to the lessons used to teach those to fish...

There is welfare and govt.support all over the place,this country supports quite a few other countries and some get no help at all,look at the mortagage lender bailout that is being debated at the moment,the majority of taxpayers seem to be against this,where has all that money disapeared to?you mean to tell me that no one has been paying their monthly mortgages.The ceo"s of these troubled lending companies must have some nice off shore accounts and they are about to receive our tax money to steal and add to it and those who are responsible for giving the aid to them know this just like the oil company big shots,everyone rips off the working man.I may have gone a little off topic in my tangent but I have seen these human leeches you refer to and there is nothing like going to the supermarket becaause they have a few items on sale and the person in line in front of you has an access card and is draped in a full length fur coat.
