Buy a digital camera:D

how bout a camra phone? no offense but i just have great doubts that this is a really an alli gar. my bets are it being a florida gar. which imo youd be alot better off if it were.

Dude, you can check out my gator gar photos in my post "Alli or Shortnose?" The photos were positively identified by fellow MFK members as that of a gator.

It's doin' fine in a tank with a Malawi eyebiter, an upside down syno, a featherfin syno, 3" pangasius, a Raphael cat, coupla' bumblebees and a pleco. Eating feeder guppies, and soon to be trained to eat anchovy and squid. Any suggestions? I have a 20"+ spotted gar who eats very well, but I already forgot how I weaned him from guppies. Thanks!

Word of advice get the Pleco out...

The Gator should take quickly to other foods just by offering them..Atractosteus never seem to be overly picky feeders when they are young.

Polypterus, why should the pleco go? Are they potentially dangerous to the rest? All of my tanks (10) have plecos in them to control algae. Is it true that they eat the mucus off slow-moving fish? Could they pose a threat to RTC, oscars, clarias, Raphaels or gars? Hope you can elaborate. Thanks

Plecos and Gars are a very bad mix..I would not take the risk. I'm not sure about your other fish and Pleco as I have not kept Pleco with them or Kept the fish listed...I've never owned an Oscar or an RTC for longer than a week...(those are feeder fish) I have never trusted pleco with gars so personally never kept them together.

About Pleco.
They are known very well to be incidental mucus feeders (documented) and are definitely not good Ganoid fish tankmate material. There is enough evidence to this (And I have seen hundreds of cases over the years) that I would side on the camp of being cautious rather than wait for a potential disaster.

i've heard that thawed silversides and forceps are a good way to wean off feeders. never tried it though. i think you have to get the gar a little hungry first, which might be dangerous with some of the smaller fish you have.
