yeah, rather old thread..lol. i'd like to see what it looks like now. i gotta admit, I'm thinking hybrid. Looks like a JD x FM...but who knows. besides, probably doesn't even matter unless polomax still has the fish. :)

I have had two JD's over the years that were a similar red. Similar but not anywhere near as much. I would be willing to say that fish is NOT a hybrid. I would however call it a "sport" . Either that or it was simply one of the red bellied JD's and it was raised from a small fry on a diet high in red pigment color enhancing foods . Or maybe even a combo of both. Abberancies occur , that is where line breeding started. Someone saw a fish at some point amongst their fry that was just a bit more well colored than the others . THis locale is my favorite of the dempsey. Sadly they are not around as much as they used to be. Hopefully the OP did work with this fish to try to get them spread around.

Great fish ! I hope it is still doing well !

I longer have the fish as I was out of the hobby for awhile. I had to get rid off all my fish tanks due to unfortunate circumstance.

+1. That dempsey may not be a hybrid itself, but either it's mother or father was almost certainly a hybrid. I smell firemouth somewhere in the genetic line.
