In the past 6 months or so I have become a big arowana fan. Currently I own 2 silver aro's and just bought 1 4" african aro yesterday!! I plan to setup a 240 gallon tank, as an amazon tank, and a 125 gallon tank as an african tank!! So i have been looking everywhere for the african arowana and suddenly yesterday one of my LCF's got in like 25 african aro's....

I did research them and I do know they are continous filter feeders, with a high metabolism and need hard alkaline water with live plants and some algae possibly...

So here is what I did:

I bought a 20 gallon long off my friend for $10. I used a light gravel substrate almost like sand but a little heavier and thicker... I got a emperor 280 from petsmart and threw that on there... I setup last night and took a bio wheel and a filter pad from my emperor 400 and switch them on to the empror 280 to get the bacteria growing in that tank quickly... I put him in and I added omega one shrimp pellets, chopped up raw shrimp, and frozen blood worms... Today I am going to go out and buy some plants I am thinking Anacharis and Cobomba since they seem to shed alot and he can eat the detritus from those plants... I put him in last night and immediately he started foraging through the sand!!

So if you guys could let me know what you think!! I open for any critcism or any suggestions on helping me keep this african aro alive! So please feel free to drop some lines guys!!

I'm jealous! Good Job. Sounds like your working your bleep off. I don't know much about the Africans, so I will watch and learn as well. Great snag! I'd love to hear how this goes.....I'm interested in them too, can your store ship?
Best of luck with your new friend....

Watch your parameters really closely, use a master chem test kit with all tests , bad water or good water a little off can kill Africans, or any aro for than matter, but the Africans are more fragile. You can take gravel from and established tank and leave a few nylon ladies stockings bags of it (rinsed and soaked)full of good bacteria to reduce the chance of a cycle so the params dont go too far off the norm.

Great idea about the gravel in a nylon bag! i should have though of that!!

Great fish store they get in alot of rarities and take very good care of their fish! The owner's name is Seng. Tell him Matt told you that they have African Arowana's...
I dont know if they'll ship but I will give you their number:

They also have a tropical fish 1 outside of Atlanta, GA, which is owned by Seng's brother... They might have fish too...

Thanks bro-appreciate it. I just got a fingerling silver. It's baby season for us all here now!!!!!!!!

Sounds like I need to take a road trip this weekend. That store is only a couple hours drive!

They're a class of their own. I own some african aros too. Currently feeding them with frozen bloodworms and I'm using partial age water and tap water for their tank. So far they're doing pretty well except one killed itself by squeezing into the sponge which is attached to the powerhead in there this morning...:(
