"Common" names are made up by breeders, collectors, distributors, fish stores, authors, forum posters, and 8-year-olds who happen to see a fish in a public aquarium and yell out a made-up name for it. I would assume breeders and fish stores are the worst offenders here.

You forgot cartoons.. Freakin "Nemo" and "Dory".. If dreamworks ever makes a cartoon about fish from the amazon I'm gunna fling a turd or write my govenor or something...

Omg this is completely how it is for me. I don't even know how to begin pronouncing some of these scientific names to where someone will know what I am saying. Better to just write them out and show the person!

I think "panaque" was one I stumbled on...I was asking someone if they ever got blue panaques in, and I stopped and had no idea how to pronounciate that. I was thinking it was "pan-ah-quee" or something...haha. It is "panack".

After a couple of months, I had a office full of women calling it Pantera Bread. I feel that I was doing them a favor. Panera sounds stupid and Pantera is a kick *** band. Everyone wins.

Dude....check out craigslist if you want to find some of the most comical/sad spellings and grammar. Usually they are somewhat phonically spelled, but its pretty hilarious.

My manager says "ideal" instead of "idea."
I've already started to switch to "ideal" subconsciously. This is terrible.

i just call it a leaf fish but i am a offender i guess of ID sharks even thought there a type/species of catfish but to me shark is easier than saying catfish when it comes to ID sharks..

But wait, there's also a SA fish called a "leaf fish."
