For every rule there's the exception that proves said rule. Over the years, usually out of ignorance, I've done my share of putting fish together that were never supposed to share a tank. Some of the times these crazy combinations would work by sheer luck or some divine intervention. Other times they did not. Personally, my oddest odd couple was an 8 in. RB piranha that shared a tank with a fancy goldfish with bloat that wasn't getting better. The intent was to put the goldfish out of its misery, but it hung on for weeks until I finally euthanized it. Meanwhile, the piranha consumed dozens of feeder comets. While most experts might recommend it, I've always had great success keeping adult male jags with Nicaraguan females 1/4 their size. They always seem to get along famously. When I lived in Chicago, the Lincoln Park Zoo kept a large caiman in a display with a huge male Dovii (even though I went several times I never remembered to bring a camera). At any rate, I've always been curious about experiences people have had with tank mate combinations that were never supposed to work yet somehow did. I know I'm being a hypocrite, but photos would obviously be a plus. I hope people respond and I also hope nobody tries any of these experiments at home:).

I know one way to get away with certain unlikely combos is to have a huge tank. How large is yours? I have to say, however, that I bought some type of red and orange flowerhorn from a LFS and the d%@n thing tried to kill everything in a 265 minutes after I stuck him in there. Luckily at the time I had a spare 75 and I traded him back in after a day or two.

I had fish divided off at one end of my 150 to keep them safe from my oscar and ornate, but some got past the divider and I eventually just removed it. I had a 4.5" and 2.5" pair of festivums and other similarly sized fish with a foot-long oscar for a couple months before I set up my 75 for them.

Nice and nice! I can't wait to see pics of the 600. I've seen pics 'of adult oscars in community tanks that included angels, so that makes combo makes sense to me (although it probably wouldn't generally be recommended by most LFS employees). Like most intelligent cichlids, Oscars have varying personalities. Out of desparation, I stuck a pink tail chalceus in a tank with an adult male jag because it was having the snot beat out of it by a female polleni in another tank. I was pretty convinced he would kill it. To my surprise, he's only shown mild interest and the chalceus is doing fine. Probably because my jag didn't consider it a threat. I've had a couple of ornate and delhezi bichirs throughout the years as well and I've come to the conclusion that if they can't fit in their mouths, they don't bother about it. Good luck to you both!
