Is this doable? I was thinking of modifying a terrarium into a hive, putting it on my desk nest to a window, with a cleartube going from the hive and out the window.
:D

It's certainly doable, I've seen it been done a couple times. Just make sure it is sealed well. I would build a tubular exit that links to the outside, allowing the bees to go back and forth collecting honey etc.

yeah i mean i guess it would be possible just have to make super sure that all the seams and openings to your room are completely sealed, but i dont know about you but i would think that would be a bit loud for being in my bedroom i mean you will be constantly hearing their buzzing when you are trying to sleep, and how would you maintain it without the bees getting into your room?

Sounds awsome. I think it would work great. Just make sure the terrarium is sealed really well. How would you get a hive going in there anyway? And what would happen after winter when they all die off?

there is a store near me that does it during the summer. they have a box with a clear window in the front and a clear tube leading to a bunch of flowers. its awesome

why would they die off in winter? bees survive as a species so therefore they have to be able to live through winter since they maintain their young within the hive, the larvae wouldn't survive without the bees caring for them, and bee keeping industry would go broke if they had to buy new colonies every year, and with bee hives they are designed to not let the queen out so the bees will always come back to the hive where their queen is. OP you just have to make sure to feed them sugar water during the winter so they don't wander too far in the cold if your harvesting their honey

I know they dont all die off, but only the adults hibernate through the winter. In the spring they rebuild the colonies over agian.

Well, I am in SoCal, so we dont have bad winters or anything.
I'm not sure how I would get into it though. I wouldnt want to open it inside. aha

What kind of bees are you gonna keep?

No idea. Whatever would work best. This is just in the early planning stages right now. :]

Is it possible to get a carpenter bee queen? Or bumbles? Huge bees would be pretty awesome.
