Carpenter bees like to drill through any kind of wood they can find. And they have lots of little chambers spread out through the wood. Carpenter bees are pretty fun if you can catch one and tie a string around its abdomen.

Could I make a solid wood beehive? With glass on the outside or something?
No idea where I would get a queen though.

ooooook you def DONT want carpenter bees ANYWHERE NEAR your house, these guys are relentless and if they find just one piece of bare wood on your home/porch they will bore into it, even if the wood is treated, my parents porch is all treated wood and we had huge problem with carpenter bees a couple years ago, pretty much got to the point where we had to restain and reseal the wood and paint several coats of gloss to keep them away from it, other than that it depends on what you want with the hive, if your looking for honey then i think there are only like 2 honey bee species commonly available, cant remember what they are right now but those would be your best bet and then you would get some nice fresh honey out of the deal. but yeah figuring out the logistics of how to make it so that you can maintain it will be hard, maybe make it so that the whole side that is against the window can open up and the honeycomb shelf things can be slid out side ways, so whenever you want to get inside you would just open window and hang blanket over rest of window and then either awkwardly get to by reaching through window and around, or get ladder and do it from outside

and if your set on carpenter bees, im sure my parents would probably PAY YOU to come out here and follow the bees back to their queen and get her lol, and i actually dont even know if these guys do live together in a hive because they lay there eggs in the tunnels that they drill and not all in hive together like honey bees...

Yeah man, just set up a box, cool if you install a window so you can see and just have a couple of tubes or two. I will get you a photo of one next thurs or fri if I can.

aha, maybe carpenters arn't a good idea then. :D

Im not so much looking for honey, as I am just thinking it would be something pretty cool to be able to watch. Honey is a plus, but im not sure how i would get it out if the hive was inside.

oh ok then yeah i think bumble bees would be cool then if you could find a queen, and they have the added plus of not being able to sting if they do happen to get in the house

Go with normal domestic bees, they are predictable and relatively docile

You could just make the hive so you can close off the tube and the hive then be able to remove it to outside so you can get inside.... I think its actually a fairly simple plan and would be really cool.
