Hello from a new, aspiring, MFK! I have a 68g tank, and I'm planning on getting 3 or 4 channa bleheri. There is a bit of a debate concerning the temperature they prefer. Many sources quote that they prefer colder temperatures during winter 18-20 C (64-68 F) and during the summer a bit warmer at 25-26C (77-79F). Do you have any ideas at what the optimal temperature should be?

Also, I'm searching for their proper roomate. I've already bought some yasuhikotakia morleti, but I'm pretty sure that when my snakeheads grow a bit, the morleti will be considered lunch... I'd rather have something from the Asian region, keeping it more of the certain biotope.

Thanks! :D

There should be no debate about it.
Channa Bleheri ARE sub-tropical Channa.
My winter temps were 19c (for most of the year) and 22-24 in July/August.

As for tank mates, none.
Channa should be kept as species only.

Thank you! The problem is that it gets pretty hot during the summer here, and temperatures will rise to 27-28-29. Will the fish have a problem for 1-2 months of this temperature?

Hi

Try keeping terracota tiles or marble tiles when it gets warm in those 2 months as it'll bring down 2 to 3 degrees. My sub tropical snakeheads have to go through higher temperatures than what you've mentioned in Bangalore, India but these work for me. Mine often breed after ups and downs in temperature.

Cheers,
Tabby

Thanks Tabby! What do you mean by "keeping"? Just placing them in the tank?

Yes place them in the tank in peak summers. Terracota tiles definitely get the water temperature down by at least 2 degrees and work well in a subtropical Channa tank.

Channa can take the warmer temps for a while but this would make them more comfortable.

Would the channas enjoy the cover of caves? I'm currently thinking and trying to set up my hardscape (wood, stones etc), and I need to know whether they need some cave-like formations to hide in, or if the dense plants will be enough.

agreed with tabby, add something into the tank with a high specific heat capacity to help regulate the temperature in the tank. The stones as mentioned by him should be sufficient to regulate the temperature
