info/thoughts on northern pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Northern pike get to 5ft here in the uk. That's over 50lb. They are a cool fish, but unless your willing to go for an insane sized tank, it's probably not worth it. Would it be an idea to go for another species of essox? You have access to them in the states, so it makes sense. I'd have a smaller essox if I could, as here in the uk we only have the big feller.

thanks for the info
i found an idea thank might work for the size at a local store they have 1000 gallon
pools they are hard plastic sides and i was thinking with a little reinforcing and some sort of cover it might work kit comes with sand filter to my wife is not happy about having a 15 foot pool in basement but fish come first(hope she don't read this)

sorry forgot to add my freind had him in with some non native fish
so i convinced him not to release back into local water in case it may have
some forren sickness

Why do people think that pike will need 1000's of gallons. They grow slower then alot of fish and arn't very active unless feeding. I say put him in the 150 and enjoy for a few years. When you feel he's no longer happy bonk him on the head and fertilize a tree or something. Trust me much worse happens to pike every year ie: poison, traps, spears, arrows, and practically anything you can imagine.

They grow "slower" than a lot of other fish??? Are you joking? I think you'll have a hard time finding a faster growing fish in North America. Do you have any source for the claim they have slow growth???

I don't understand why people would even consider Northern Pike when grass and redfin pickerel are readily available and can live full term in average aquariums. I will also add that grass and redfin pickerel look and behave naturally in standard size aquariums. Large fish don't look or act naturally when they can't even turn around in a tank.

I agree with telost, if you must have a pike, go ahead and take him, put him directly in the freezer, when frozen solid, send to Bass Pro, They do beautiful mounts. You would be doing you and the fish a big favor, under the current circumstances. It would have been much better for your buddy to have just left him where he was.

if you want to keep it for life, a pond is a good idea

I don't understand it either, no matter how many times I suggest a grass/redfin to people they still decide they would rather have a pike.

Even young pike/muskie most people wanted, look like a grass pickerel...so yeah I dont understand. Same thing with Largemouth bass, where the redeye bass are much smaller than LMB.

Pike are fastest growing fish than any species even the channel catfish. Heck even muskie fingerling can reach 12 inch in less than a year depends in good conditions. So pike/muskie can outgrow 150gal in few months....bad idea.

At least in the case of the bass part of it is because redeyes are difficult to locate. Redfins and grass pickerel on the other hand are easy to find by comparison. They look virtually identical to pike and muskie, act virtually the same and grow a fraction of the size, I don't get it. Even if you just have to go "monster" there are chain pickerel who while mostly unsuitable for aquariums still stay much smaller than pike and muskie. It bottles my mind.
