Injured BD

Wow! Well at least I'm on the same page as you Richard. That is a heap of salt. I came home tonight to a Randy male BD back up to his old tricks again! Chasing the girls around. His eye is about 40% healed I would say. I'm going to leave it until Friday and if it not healed some more by then I will go and get the salt Mountain on Saturday. But honestly mate, this is great information and I am keeping record of this for future reference. Thanks a lot for your valued input.
8.5 kg is what I work that out at Jim.....lets be conservative and hit it with 7.5...it will work at that.
Let it disperse naturally through a pillow case, don't forget, reduce or even stop feeding for a few days, that way the N03 etc will not change a great deal whilst the drip is off.

Salt is a very safe and effective treatment if used at the right dose, however I agree with you, after all you can see the patient..lol ! Fish in general have great healing ability in most cases so long as the water they are living in is very good quality they will heal without any medication what so ever.

All the best!
keep us all posted.

Hi Jim,

I use either pond salt or cooking salt. This should be used at a rate of 1\2 Oz per gallon of aquarium water,

im pleased to see you mentioned using table salt. i know you usually say not to use table/cooking salt and probably for the same reasons that im asking the question on another thread here regarding salt.
it would be nice to hear your experiences with salt & cooking/table salt on the other thread regarding salt :
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...67275-salt-and-anti-caking-agents-(2-Viewing)

could you clarify the salt amount as the american/english gallons etc gets a bit confusing. the guide i use lists grams of salt per liter of water which i find very helpful and has aided me many times including just recently in getting rid of ich on some other new fish recently .

what is 1/2 oz / gallon in grams and liters ?

At no point did I mention using "table" salt Gaz, either pond salt or cooking salt is what I use.

In the UK I am guessing we are talking about cooking salt such as Saxa.
Anyway the eye is around 70% or more healed so I am not treating for now. However this has been a valuable lesson. At least if I hot a situation where I have to use salt, I know what to do.

Typical salt treatment is 4lbs of salt per 100 gallons of water. This sounds like alot but would be for ich or bacterial. For a wound the proper dose would be prob 2lbs per 100 gallons. But i always recommend just clean water for ray wounds

apologies for the confusion richard. i was refering to table salt as being same stuff you cook with that you would put in the salt shakers, hence why i grouped table and cooking salt together when i said "table/cooking salt" at the begining of the post and then continued to refer to it as "table" salt.
i was suprised to see you mention cooking/table salt as i know you have advised against it in the past that was all.

i didnt mean any harm and obviously its best to err on the side of caution. its something ive wondered about for some time and have asked the same question in the past but you get different replys depending on whos around at the time and what your post count is amongst other things.
as you already know ive recently asked the same question again and knowing of your vast knowledge and experience i as well as others enjoy having your take on things. i assume that just like everyone else you change/update the way you do things and the things you use ( usually for the better through experience) so im not pointing fingers or anything just looking to advance my own knowledge as most people are.

jim, if it helps at all, when i had a bike accident i smashed my face and white of my eye was red for over 6mths. rays seem to heal much quicker than us and seem to be better at it too.
glad to hear your ray is on the mend without meds. i think that sometimes we treat fish just because we feel better knowing we have done something that might help. salt i think is also good for this as it doesnt damage the tank like other meds can.

good luck and i hope the ray heals fully.
