One of my clarias cats has injured its tail and I'm often seeing my (much smaller) severums trying to nibble on it.

I'm currently dosing the tank with Melafix hoping to get that tail to heal but it's taking a while... and the nibbling attempts are not arranging things...

One of my friends told me to add salt to the tank... saying that this will speed up the healing process...

But I have my doubts... won't the salt hurt the clarias?

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you in advance.

So... no one can help me?

You do not need salt. If your fish is bullying another, address the problem, don't leave them to aggravate matters for you. Separate the severums and do daily water change only. That should suffice for now.

Thank you for your reply, Lupin. :) I will do that.

Though it's not really a bullying problem... the severums are only babies (3 inches max.) and the cat is about 33 inches long... the thing is that when the babies swim by and see the injured tail of that cat (which, as usual, spends a lot of time lying on the substrate), they try to nibble on it. Just a peck that makes the cat move away yet that can't be good for the healing process.

So... I'm going to take your advice and move the severums until the cat heals. Thank you again. :)

Oh. Now I see what you mean. Yes, most fish tend to be curious and will even make the wound look worse than ever by constantly nipping it. Isolation and water changes will help it recover. Feed varied diet to help it boost its immune system thus allowing it to battle possible secondary infections.

I closed your other thread on your request.:)

Thanks a lot for this, Lupin. :) I really appreciate it.

So... I will keep the cat isolated until it heals... with daily water changes and using salt (I'll discontinue the Melafix)... and I'm planning to feed it once every two days to maintain the water quality...

I've stopped the Melafix and I'm doing 50% water changes in the tub on a daily basis... I haven't added salt yet and the fish hasn't been fed since I placed it there 2 days ago...

One thing I've noted is the strong fish smell that the tub is giving off when I get very near to it (never smelled that in any of my tank)... any ideas about that?
