Insufficient Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree... adding another filter in and of itself isn't going to "fix" anything... what are your other water perameters? generally biologically speaking your sump/filtration shuold more then handle your tank.. i have 3x the bio-load on my 120 running a 40gal home-made sump... and don't have any issues w/ bio availability... your solution may be as simple as adding more bio media to your existsing set-up or you may have something off in your current set-up thats easily shifted.. w/out knowing your water perametes, specifics on your filtration its hard to say why your getting ammonia readingsa.. you may also have decor, substrate, even a stuck peice of food in some random spot rotting causing the issue.

Let's just go back to the basics and explain filtration. This whole conversation needs a restart.

So the water params are ammonia .25, nitrite 0, and nitrate 15 ppm. I have been doing 50% water changes twice a week over the past month or so. I highly doubt that there is anything rotting in the tank because i have been having problems with ammonia for probably 2 months ( which already killed my arowana a few weeks ago). As for the uv its a corallife 36 watt sterilizer.

OP asked if he should add another filter. He has a 40 gallon wet/dry that's filled with bio balls. If he's having an ammonia problem, he either has something in the tank causing it or a lack of bio media to break the ammonia down. I believe that that would solve his problem. The tank has been running for quite sometime now but his fish are getting bigger and he might be overfeeding.

If you read my previous posts, my water changes are definetely on track as i have been doing 40-50% water changes twice a week. Also, to show that my water change schedule has nothing to do with the problem, i just did a 50% water change the day before yesterday (which was the second water change i have done this week), and the ammonia is back today.

As you can see from my pics i just posted, the tank is lightly stocked and i'm also confident i'm not overfeeding.
