Hello everybody. If you've read my profile, you'll see that I am a geneticist. I am considering mixing work with play and engineering some fertile GFP* enhanced or blue bioluminescent cichlids. I would most likely work off of some albino cons that I have bred myself. However, it would represent a significant monetary investment in the range of 4-5000 dollars for me personally, and I need to know if there is potential interest in buying these. If you are wondering WHY the cost is so much, look up on the internet the cost of a milliliter of TAQ (thermus aquaticus protein). Were the euipment costs not offset by my laboratory, it would bee entirely impossible. Soooo... input. Thanks

*green flourescent protein, this would make an ENTIRE glowing green or blue fish

What do you actually do to the fish to make them glow. Are you only feeding them this "green flourescent protein"?

would the glow be something that is temporary and fade, or would it be permanent. Also would these fish be breedable?

Are you wanting to do something like what was done with the zebra danios and the jellyfish DNA. Or is this something different.

Would they be saleable in the USA?

I like my fish the way they come from the lakes and rivers. Put the scissors down and back away from the fish :screwy:

i'd have to say that i like fish that are at least semi-natural, like nice color morphs and not out of control selective breeding but not things specifically done to alter fish, i hate to wonder what kind of freak show they did to flowerhorns...combining at least 5 species, that's just weird

I have to say that could be very cool. Now will you be making the convicts producing their own phosphorescent proteins or would the effect be temporary like the painted fish? I'm more into natural looking fish but the science of it I find very intriguing.

I'm sorry, that's disgusting. Leave the damn fish alone. If you wanna play, try it on yourself...at least you have the choice.
