i was just wondering how many i can keep in a 180g tank and wat u guys suggest for a snakehead beginner...also r they really that aggressive wit other fish and PPL?! i heard that they can crack n break aquariums when they get bigger...is it truth?also how much do they go for usually n where can i find?
thanx

Hi,usually the dwarf species are not aggressive as the larger ones, but the best thing to do is to keep a species tank.

for a 180gal i would go with the medium size guys , they will max out in there and or very entertaining fish , max size around 14-18"

there are several choices , you would need to decide if you wanted tropical speciies or a sub-tropical species.

but a few to look at that would be great for a first time channa keeper would be

channa aurantimaculata - best coloured - sub tropical
parachanna obscura - interesting pattern and shape - tropical
channa maculata - argus look-alike - just as feisty - sub tropical
channa pleuro - would only keep a pair of theese as they like to swim - active- tropial

the smaller species would look lost in that tank if/when they paired up
the bigger species would look very crammed in that tank when adult

i would check out the photo thread in the sticky and decide which you loke the look of , and we could help you further from there .

thanx a lot that was very helpful!is it recommended to keep more than 1 snakehead in an aquarium?other than the channa pleuro that u mentionned to keep in pairs, the other ones have to be alone?

Hi, like tropheus said your best bet with be with medium size channas, depending on the size(lenght) of your tank and setup,Id say 3 to 5 channas.

yeah , a true pair works best in any snakehead set-up , but you cannot just put a male and female together and get a pair , the pair must choose themselves out of a group and bond , once bonded the are bonded for life , and will live happy together .

i would start out with a small group 4-6 fish and remove the others as a bond forms , or if possable buy a bonded pair to begin with ,although hard to find allready bonded and command a much higher price.
