Interesting, unique fish for 120 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have any experience with them but wouldn't CB endlicheri and CB lapradei also be an option since they stay smaller? From what i've read they'll take a while to get to 20" (if they ever do)

Hello all! I have just set up my 120 (dimensions are 50"x20"x28"). It is currently cycling, and I am running a Fluval FX6, as well as a Hydor 150, and three powerheads. Do you all have suggestions for cool, unique, interesting fish that would work well in an aquarium like this? Thank you in advance!
Hello Sadrobots Sadrobots ,
I'm not sure if you want oddballs or not. You did say unique which many oddballs are. You also said you are looking for something that is cool and interesting. I really think an Amphilophus would be a great choice. Some ideas would be Trimac, Red Devil, Midas and Lyonsi. I'm not saying Bichirs aren't cool fish to have though. They are a unique and a popular fish to keep. GL with your choice of fish.

Paratilipia polleni or Amphilophus lyonsi or Saxatilis type South American pike

Add a shoal of dithers with any one of them

Puffers are also cool. Too small for a fahaka, but it is good for amazons, schoutodini, and most of the lurkers.
Or a leopard ctenopoma + bichirs + butterflyfish and you’ve got a nice African biotope(TheMaskedShadow‘s ears perking up at that).

oddballs would be AWESOME. ive been looking ibnto those a bit. which oddballs would be a good choice for that tank?

If you are willing to go brackish or salt you could get smaller morays or lionfish.
In fresh: archers, butterflyfish, small wolf fish, bichirs, spiny eels, leporinus, rarer cichlids, EXODONS!!!!, puffers, and ctenopoma.

I was looking at archerfish, would I have to make the aquarium into a paludarium of sorts?

It wouldn’t be necessary, but would look cool to have insectivorous fish and lizards/frogs mixed in a pauladarium.
Archers can live in a filled tank, they just will spit on you instead of bugs.
