You can add live plants to the bucket of gravel which will thrive or use an ornamental flower pot instead of an ugly bucket if aesthetics concern you. I use fish food buckets because I always have several vertical stacks on hand.

Is this filter pad covered with some kind of chemical that reduces ammonia?

As I read it, that doesn't pump any water at all; it's just the filter, and requires you to supply a separate pump to operate it.
I use these for tanks with small live stock like shrimp and fish that like tight spaces (ie kuhli loach)
