i had a glass heater malfunction not to long ago and kill most of my synodontis petricola. i decided when that happened i was going to go to all titanium. so every month since then i've bought at least one titanium heater.
i've got 300w in the bigger tanks and 200w in the tanks under 100 gallons. i need 2 more and then i'll be free of glass heaters completely.
i'm a little bit of a control freak.. with the intank heaters i feel like i have better control. the reason the one in the garage was able to do the damage that it did was because it was in the garage. Actually, still is, but now i make a point of going out there at least once a day to check the temp.. that tank already has a 200w titanium heater.
the inline heaters scare me, if one malfunctions i'm afraid it would pour boiling water into my tanks.. and it's inline in a filter line, so it takes more effort than just pulling a plug and pulling the heater out of the tank to correct a problem. And i'm not even going to entertain the thoughts of leaks caused by such things.
I nearly lost four of my fish yesterday. I recently bought a 90 gallon tank/stand/light and everything else that came with it. Well, I decided in the meanwhile that I would use the heater that came with it on my 72 gal bowfront. Set the temp to 78 degrees, come back a later on that night and the tank temp is 86 degrees Took it out and put some cooler water in. Finally got the temp down and tried turning the temp guage down on the heater to 72 (when the tank was at 78 degrees. Stupid heater fired right up. I think the guage on it is busted and it's maxing out everytime it's on. Could have been A LOT worse!
