the best way to get fast connection is by fiber optics, because light is faster then electrons.

Most isp's have a fiber back bone to each other... (T1 connection)

then they'll have a (t3 connection) to distribution centers.

some of those will send out lines to homes that will give you DSL.

(that is the fastest)

distributors also can do microwave internet

(this is a little slower but great for lots of close wireless users)

distributors also can do 3G (4G, wifimax, etc[normally for cellphones])

(this is very fast, BUT because of the way its engineered it has a bucket load of lag)

distributers also can do satellite internet...which beams the signal up to a satellite, then beams it down to your house...

(this is very laggy and buggy because of the shear distance between the connections...weather etc and because of the hardware on the satellites most of the time you'll get a fairly slow speed)

bc of where i live my only option is satellite, so im thinking about calling them, maybe they can do something to speed it up, i mean internet works great, but online games nope, same with streaming netflix. thanks for all the help, i dont know anything about this, but if u ever need m1 a1 abrams driveing lessons hit me up(u got get one first as the military didnt let me keep mine lol)
 
edit: i forget to mention where Cable internet works in, sometimes cable can be as good (low ping, fast speeds) as a T1 line...sometimes it can be as bad as dial up...dial up also wasn't put it put normally has a very low latency (ping) but poor download speeds as physically it limits at 256kbps on the server side
 
I assume you live on a farm, or out in the open? your pretty much stuck to satellite the only way you can really speed it up (lag wise) is to make sure your computer is top of the line and that EVERYTHING else connected to the internet is unplugged. Also a high end router and modem would be necessary.

However, if money primited... it would cost about $100 per foot to get a line put in, if you have the money for it they will actually do it. You'd then be able to get DSL



edit: also, if she hosts the game,speeds will slightly improve. assuming her system was equal power to yours.

( edit2: before someone gets mad, yes i know i messed up the order of T1 and T3 and yes, i know they've moved on to higher things like HDSL etc )

Hey man stay away from verizon and all that Internet crap. You will pay a ton. When I was still with a seal team we had to do training all over the country and spent a lot of time in the middle of no where at training facilities. Anyway me and my bro got verizon wireless card and played mw2 for a few hrs and some Netflix over about 2weeks. Ended up going way over the plan and paying $860 some bucks.

B means bytes, b means bits.
